The Abyss and a New Year Renaissance

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-1

The long and winding road of this past year has finally reached its end. I feel broken. Exhausted. Started the year as a kid, climbing mountains ready to attack the world, and now I’m an old goat with barely the energy to take another step.

Standing here on the precipice of the Lunar New Year, staring across the dark chasm leading into the Year of the Monkey, my heart is filled part with relief – part with dread.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-2

How can I cross it, I wonder? I’ve arrived with the waning crescent moon on the doorstep of the Lunar New Year. My skin etched in wrinkles deeper than in years past, looking the worse for wear.

Tonight I meet the Queen of the Night ~ another of Mother Nature’s incredible daughters, and I have nothing left to give.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-3

She is one of the sacred mountains of Buddhism, resting in southeast Myanmar.

A serene and peaceful lady ~ she carries a pulse of life coursing through her veins like I’ve seldom witnessed.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-4

“A pulse of life…seldom witnessed” a perfect way to bring in the year, and my thoughts drift back to my girl Ellinor in the Skokomish Wilderness; guilt pounds in my heart as this year I stand enchanted with her distant cousin here in Southeast Asia.

A glimmer captures my attention. Her eyes, those dark, deep pools of mystery, draw me closer while her name leaves my tongue in knots… Mt. Kyaiktiyo, it is an honor.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-5

I pause at the entrance of her summit and wonder, “Where is the quiet solitude I expected?” and I collapse on the nearest boulder thinking “…just what have I gotten myself into?”

My last breath of the Year of the Goat is a sigh. I look around at the controlled chaos. Ms. Kyai is treating me to a scene I can barely comprehend.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-6

Every bump and bruise I’ve experienced over this past year begin to throb, and I turn to watch others arrive. Farmers bent over and exhausted from the past year, they too struggle to the summit arriving in the waiting arms of Kyai, surrendering to the year.

I close my eyes and wish I could sleep, to forever rest these aching bones. A cool hand assures me I am not alone, and Kyai begins pressing on my weary body, amplifying my pain, checking to see if I am still alive.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-7

I look into her eyes and see a smirk. With kindness, she caresses my spirit, washes her hands over me as she mutters softly “those beautiful wrinkles of life…”.

She winks at me, “create some more…” understanding the aches and wrinkles of a year well lived is a badge of honor, and she rushes off to another.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-8

My broken body experiences a sense of enlightenment watching her float away, her perfume leaves a scent of desire drifting through the night air.

My eyes land on a couple of poor workers I met a few days earlier in the hills of Northern Myanmar, but it is impossible…how could they have travelled here?!?

I watch them pass by, their soundless smiles interrupted by the unmistakable whisper of Kyai, who turns their silence into poetry, “Even when you have very little, you can still have so much…”

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-9

My romanticized ideal of Mt. Kyaiktiyo as an isolated, mystical Buddhist mountain wrapped in silence and fog has been twisted into a raucous Buddhist pilgrimage. Surrounding me, an aura of electricity powerful enough to ignite any soul.

This is why we set out on adventures…

Already, I see the deep wrinkles of my skin fade. My stooped body is straightening. My stagnant blood begins to flow freely once again.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-20

My eyes , which had faded to the point of blindness, are now refocusing on the wild dreams of young ones and the belief I can do it all.

This is the way it should be. Finishing a year in pain, broken down and dying…only to notice a young soul on the other side of the abyss coercing me from the darkness to deliver me into another yearlong journey.

I look at the spirit and youth in envy. It fills me with pride.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-10

I hear conversations around me. I taste the excitement that fills the night.

Kyai softly whispers to me, “the Year of the Fire Monkey has arrived…make it yours,” her words adding to the ecstasy of the past year and her kiss, a balm for my weary mind.

Her deep eyes are now filled with flames, and I am engulfed. The transformation has begun.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-11

The heat. The evening chill has vanished and I enter into the deeper parts of the night. Hope sheds away the skin and pain of the past year.

The flame flickers along with the ticklish words of Kyai, and together they cloak me up in the festive spirit of the final night. Within her eyes, I see what I came here for – a reflection of a young man, born again.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-13
Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-14

The glow of happiness is evident in the smiles of strangers, all who feel like family.

Seeing the New Year through young eyes, a sensation so rare it makes me question if it is even possible.

A curiosity feeds my soul to pursue life again, with new mistakes lying ahead ready to teach and guide me along the way.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-15

A faint trail of words brush over my neck singing, “Smile, adapt and move forward with courage… three simple thoughts and the Year of the Monkey is yours.” Kyai coos, sending a ripple of new blood flowing throughout my body.

Smile, adapt and move forward with courage. I can do that.

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-16

Stretching my young body off the rock I am resting, I walk past a couple in silence, their unspoken words ring loud. Tonight is where possibilities transform into reality. Another chance at renewal and happiness in life; in the words of Benjamin Button:

“We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”  – Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-17

Throughout the year, Christmas, the Lunar New Year, Diwali, Ramadan and other celebrations give us all the opportunity to renew and free the spirit from the broken down old thoughts of the past ~ the contradictions, biases and jealousies of old, angry men.

We are allowed to return to our purer form, the mind of a child ~ refreshed with the freedoms to pursue happiness and “… the courage to start all over again.”

Mt. Kyaiktiyo Myanmar Burma New Year-19

I think back to just a few short hours ago, the feeling of a wrinkled, broken down soul fully spent in the Year of the Goat, now renewed and back into a form I can recognize once again.

The renaissance of a soul and the words of Dr. Seuss prepare me for another twelve-month journey to explore, signalling the end of a brilliant year with the promise of a perfect day.

“You’re off to Great Places!  Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting, so…get on your way!”

– Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

I think we have all felt like the old soul you described so effectively Randall, and your photos compliment this ache within. “Even when you have very little, you can still have so much…” This is so true and Infact, that is when I surrender and feel my connection to everyone and everything. The year of the monkey holds wonderful energy for us all, and the monkey reminds me that when I am lacking energy, that perhaps I have forgotten that playfulness and entertainment are good for me. I can see from your pictures how the beautiful energy of these people renewed your soul.

You have been blessed to be where you are right now. Continue to do what you are doing because every journey you took obviously enriched your soul— I believe, making you a better person. The wrinkles aren’t marks of years wasted but a life well-lived.

It is however, never late to embark on whatever it is you still long to dream, places you ought to go or mountains you wish to summit. Follow where the wind takes you. Happy New Year! 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Maricel ~ the trip to Mt. Kyaiktiyo (and all of my travels actually) brings something new to discover and I couldn’t agree more, new wrinkles makes for perfect signs of a life well lived. So many dreams out there yet to be realized. Cheers to a great year.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

“Use the camera like a paint brush…” that is a great thought and I suppose a very accurate portrayal of photographs that move. If you can find your way to Myanmar, definitely try to find the time. Met some amazing travelers from India during my time there ~ wish you and your wife happy travels.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

If you get the chance, it is worth a visit – especially during a holiday or Buddhist festival, and the atmosphere is so rich. I too almost did not go there, but for NYE it seemed a good place to be versus Yangon. Wish you safe travels Bama in the year ahead.

Such a thought-provoking piece about carrying on and pushing forwards. I really like the rhetorical questions to yourself in this post, and I think all of us have asked ourselves those questions at some point. We can certainly go the distance if we put our minds to it. Often, all it takes is one step forward and we’ve begun a new journey.

“… the courage to start all over again.” It is quite fascinating to see how so many of us find it timely to begin a new when a festival or significant moment in time rolls around, and how these moments tend to bring us all together. It certainly seemed that way when you were taking those photos, especially of the happy-go-lucky children. They were certainly very happy to pose for you. Perhaps we don’t want to go the distance alone. Perhaps we all want someone to hold onto and tell us things will be okay. To quite a lot of children, I believe they always reckon anything’s never impossible and why not smile along the way since everything will be okay in the end.

Happy New Year, and happy Year of the Monkey. Wishing you good health and luck right back at you 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It is so true that we often ask rhetorical questions and they do serve to remind us to ponder over the reasons/options we are facing. There is nothing quite like the New Year for me (both solar and lunar), as it is this feeling of rebirth ~ reviewing the past year and then looking forward to creating some new opportunities in the one ahead. Atop Kyaiktiyo was a perfect place to ring in a new year as it was such a positive atmosphere with everyone wishing for magic in the upcoming year. Wish you a great year ahead Mabel, thank you.

A dreamy, evocative post, Randall. Your photos and lyrical words go so well together! Both convey so much of the mood and magic of this holy place. I very nearly went to Kyaiktiyo last year with Bama, but we agreed that it was better to save it for a future trip. Cheers for a memorable Year of the Monkey filled with joy, new experiences and inspiring travels! 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The New Year always is a bit evocative to me ~ I can be very reflective but mostly I am dreaming about what possibilities lie ahead. This post was a fun one to create because of the mood a New Year brings. I do think you’d enjoy My. Kyaitiyo, especially during one of their holidays…the people there will make it so memorable. Then again, all of Myanmar seemed to do this for me. Thanks James and wish you a great year ahead.

Thank you, Julie, upon reading about Mt. Thanks, Brad, the coming of a new year is always one of my favorite times as it is a good time to relax, dream and step away from life for a few days…and think about the possibilities. 1. Writing to Freedom Avatar

I agree Randall that the new year (and other times) is a good time to step back and reflect on our lives. So are you more oriented around the Chinese New Year than the US New Year?

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I suppose I am more oriented toward the Solar New Year (US), as it feels to me when my new year starts. The Lunar New Year is a chance to re-think the year a month in, which is very valuable but just a different feel.

“Within her eyes, I see what I came here for – a reflection of a young man, born again.”

Wherever we go, whatever we seek, in the end it’s all about coming home. The strangers you met felt like family. The festivals you experienced allowed you to return to your purer form, as a child. When you reach your mountain, whether Ellinor or Mt. Kyaiktiyo, you will know it because you will have returned home.

I no longer have it in me to praise your photography as excellence has become your baseline.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

There is this great feeling I get when I travel to new places, and that is I will end up at some point feeling very comfortable ~ as if I’ve made a new home. There was something special about the people who made the trek to Kyaiktiyo along with the coming of the new year. I hope you meet people with a different point of view…” this quote alone made me think how timeless these thoughts are, and so relevant to the political & social situation I see back in the USA. Wishing you a great start to the year ahead!

Year of the monkey. The monkey is both clever, witty, entertaining and cunning, it should be an interesting year 😉
Oh Randy, these romances with many different ladies will not be the end of you yet,lol
Even while in the corridor of yet another conqueror of your heart, you still sneak a peak at one of your many loves.
I adore your devotion to them all, and relish more, your awe at the meeting of a new one.
You act as one who has never known such love, such beauty. Like a child indeed, you see it anew, with fresh thoughts and deeper curiosity.
Your journey is one of glory which I constantly tell you. You can’t imagine how much I admire your sense of adventure and courage. You my friend have flown without wings, and live as though it was the last days. To me, that does not make for tired bones. You have seen through invisible eyes, the eyes of the many you encounter as your journey continues to lead you further into the depths of our realm. This, and your yearning for more, perhaps counts for the weariness of your being. You simple are overdosed on life.

You always manage to put something up just around same periods when there are pending madness in my world, and just as I wonder what the fuss is all about, you give me something to chew on.
Oh, putting Fitzgerald in there, and that quote, simple sealed the deal for me. I’m convinced now I’m ready to smile, adapt and move forward with courage.
Thank you for yet another soul uplifting one, and happy year of the monkey to you.

I too think it will be a very interesting year of the monkey ahead of us Dotta ~ and, of course, nothing quite like romancing life to keep it this way. It keeps both the mind and heart young, yes?!? A wonderful comment, and now you have me wanting to read the Fitzgerald short-story (I had forgotten that he wrote it…), so thank you very much! And yes, I think there is nothing quite like facing life with a smile and moving forward with courage, a sure way to experience the beauty of life. Cheers to a great year for you and your family.
