A Sea of Island Universes

Under a summer sky, I effortlessly slip into dreams, basking in the freedom and ease the other three seasons do not provide. While springtime sets the scene with its chaotic dance of rain and storms and its idyllic growth of nature, I exploit it in the summer months.ย ย ย

Life’s responsibilities fade, making it easier for me to wander and explore. Hiking or kicking back with family and friends; the Olympic Mountains and Pacific Northwest are old friends.

But there is also an underrated summer pastime I enjoy: simply exploring the inner universe of my mind.

The universe within the mind is an indispensable retreat from reality. It offers the freedom to become lost in a world shaped uniquely for each of us, shaped in how we wish it to be. A sanctuary of our own making.

Every differing opinion and idea that runs contrary vanishes, and life becomes more peaceful.

Peering up at the night sky, I sink into thought, awed by the vast expanse of the universe. It holds mysteries and answers humans may never come to know. Yet human nature canโ€™t sit still; we always seek the undiscovered. The vastness of the unknown is not intimidating but inspirational. It gives impetus to learn more โ€“ to glimpse into something new.

It’s the same within the universe of our mind. The unimaginable becomes possible, with connections spanning eons to spark curiosity.

In the 18th century, Immanuel Kant coined the term โ€œisland universesโ€ when debating galaxies like the Milky Way. Aldous Huxley then philosophically applied this term to the extent that other peopleโ€™s lives and minds are similarly unknowable, each an island universe.

This thought fascinates me.

Every day, people swim around in depths of thoughts, ideas, and emotions forever unobtainable to me. There are enough similarities to allow me to communicate, and we have shared empathy, but the only place that holds certainty for me is the universe in my mind.

Huxley wrote in his The Doors of Perception: โ€œWe live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselvesโ€ฆ By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitudeโ€ฆ We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves. From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes.โ€

While part of me is uncomfortable with never fully understanding another, I also find peace with this idea. Isnโ€™t that what life is about, figuring out this delicate dance between our island universe and the outside world?

We certainly canโ€™t only live within our minds. Reality has a way of drawing us back into the world. As the famous Godfather quote goes: โ€œJust when I thought I was out, they dragged me back inโ€ฆโ€

The continual bridge-building between the universe in my mind and those I connect with, reconciling the lessons and experiences along the way, is what I can do in my short time on Earth.

If there ever was a bridge between my inner universe and reality, it may begin when I pick up my camera and pen.

Pieces of nature around me. The connections that run deep within my family and friends. Connections that make life work.  Bridges allow me to share pieces of my universe with them as they do with me. Through this, we learn and progress.

Iโ€™m content with the knowledge I will never fully understand who they are, as they will never fully understand me. It is unsurprising, as I have yet to understand much about myself.

When it comes down to it, we are all amateur scientists in one form or another, operating in a place where the laws of physics seemingly do not apply. But we make it work by continually experimenting and searching to discover what connects us all.

Living among such a wild range of individuals is the electricity of life. We click with some and not with others, and through this, we explore pieces of new island universes. We seek adventures and experiences from old friends or a new soul passing by, a mode many successful mad scientists use to obtain wisdom.

Floating through life, bouncing between the island universe and those around us, creates the links that make it all work. We share common goals of peace and working together to resolve issues to find something as close to nirvana as possible.

The very nature of the inability to ever fully understand one another will result in stress and disagreements, but these aspects of life have always been integral to growth, offering the opportunity to step back from reality, exhale, and then adapt. Make compromises through learning and trust.

Admitting to the possibility of a different way of thinking and solving a problem, we embrace this responsibility. From this comes wisdom.

Creating bridges between our internal universe and those around us enhances life. Bridges of empathy and compassion allow us to discover while realizing we can never truly appreciate the experiences of others. One of my favorite Native American sayings growing up was, โ€œNever judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins.โ€

Accepting this, we give up the need to control and instead recognize and accept core differences we can never comprehend. It is respect. It is where love takes root.

To love is to accept pieces of another outside universe into our own. Admit there is a reality unlike what flows inside our island universe, continually adjust, and move forward. The alternative is to dance around petty arguments and waste time.

Interestingly, much of what we think of others and what others think of us are pure figments of imagination. If we become disappointed when others do not follow the โ€œrules and lawsโ€ of our island universe, we end up suffering more in imagination than in reality.

It is as terrifying as it is beautiful.ย  Of all the millions of ideas and possibilities floating around in the mind, only a fraction are shared with the world.

Understanding this makes me a lot more empathetic to others. We are unpredictable and, at times, inconsistent. My universe steers me one way, and then, within a beat of my heart, I shift to another path.

Knowing those around me undergo similar swings is both comforting and unsettling. If we can barely fathom our depths, how dangerous is it for us to try to fathom the ideas and actions of others?

The more we touch and experience other island universes, the more we know about ourselvesโ€ฆ and the more we are understood by others.

This is the beauty of bridging our island universes. Growth. Wisdom. Evolution.

It can only take place when we become humble. Open to those of differing thoughts.

Our society needs stability, and family and friends often form this foundation. However, our creative nature also recognizes the need for chaos, the freedom to strive for the unobtainable, and the need to capture this spirit of life.ย

As mentioned earlier, to love is to accept pieces of another outside universe into our own. Embrace, learn, and enhance the mind โ€“ itโ€™s how to deepen the soul.

The excitement of life is witnessing universes around us expand and evolve. Seeing it happen is one of the simple joys, and the highlight of this summer was when my nephew Riley announced his engagement to Annalise.

There is nothing quite like the sight of two beautiful universes coming together, enriching all who interact with them. Small bridges, built through curiosity, empathy, and love, can develop into something magical, allowing us all to grow. Such moments once again confirm that the world is a beautiful place.ย

The world is indeed a beautiful place Randall. As is the workings of our inner mind and Universe, or our island Universe as you so eloquently wrote about here. So fascinating. Sure we never truly know what another is thinking, after all, weโ€™re all so uniquely different and complex, but I guess thatโ€™s the beauty and mystery of the intricacies of our Universe and life. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos, both the black and white and coloured images, such gorgeous snapshots of your world. And your writing, as always, is sublime. Truly a joy to read. Sending warm wishes and much love your way. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

It is a bit funny; as Iโ€™ve gotten older, it becomes easier to see how โ€˜thinkingโ€™ evolves between generations and among my peers as well. This intrigues me most about the idea of our island universes in our mindsโ€ฆ so much experience, thoughts, and emotions wrapped inside that it is challenging to communicate clearly ๐Ÿ˜‚. But somehow, we manage to do pretty well in the end. Thank you for your wonderful comment, Miriam. As you wrote above, it is the beauty and mystery of life that makes it so perfect. You don’t want Koyaanisqatsi. I think how you see the world does not qualify as needing help. The world needs more people who see things more like you do. More people need to see the world and experience other cultures.

It’s a great word. I don’t think many people today who are conditioned for fast-moving action could sit through the movie. It’s a film that also needs to be experienced on a large screen.

It is such a delight to see you again this evening, Randall. It’s been a while. What a thoughtful, heartfelt post. I read it earlier, and came back for another late night read. So much food for thought, from the universe within and beyond, to the sea of island universes around us.

The imagination is infinite. Going within to explore our inner world and letting our mind roam free, the possibilities of the sanctuary of our own making is endless. This is also the moment where we may have more questions than answers about who we are and where we want to go – and as you said, these are answers we may never come to know. I think that’s part of what the universe throws at us: for us to be challenged to see and listen to the messages it brings, to trust in the path that we are on and have faith in the universe itself.

I smiled when you said you find peace in the idea of figuring out about dancing between our island universe and outside world. As someone who never really feels like I belong anywhere, I often muse at the challenge to align my world with society as it drifts by. To me, it’s not about trying to ‘fit in’ with a group or community or with family. But more so immersing myself in each experience and moment wherever I am. Simply being present and engaged speaks volumes to others, and a way to connect and build bridges. Make the most of where I am and who I am with, and the rest will unfold…

‘To love is to accept pieces of another outside universe into our own.’ This is my favourite line in your piece. I might have to borrow it some time ๐Ÿ˜„ Indeed we can never fully understand each other which is not a bad thing. Differences and disagreements by way of others often highlight what we are not aware of. They mirror our inner world back to us . They are opportunities to take a step back, think and question – to put our ego aside and step closer to the experience of love.

Congratulations to your nephew on his engagement. What a wonderful time. Every photo of yours is absolutely stunning. And your words, so philosophical and so poetic at the same time. No less from you ๐Ÿ˜ It is pleasure to read you again, Randall. Hope you have been enjoying every bit of Summer and what’s left of it. Take care and wishing you well ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you very much, Mabel. I love how you say, โ€œThe imagination is infiniteโ€ฆโ€ Realizing the truth of your words makes it easier to trust where our creative mind leads us, follow the path, and have faith in the universe. And while doing so, we enjoy what life brings and even learn the intricate dance between our mind and reality ๐Ÿ˜Š. I can relate to viewing a culture from the outside, and while at times it flows by without much understanding, being present and building bridges (no matter how small) can make things close to perfect.

It is funny that your favorite line is, โ€œTo love is to accept pieces of another outside universe into our own.โ€ This was to be the central theme of my writing: the impossibility of fully understanding others, which, instead of being a detriment, is very valuable as it is the most potent avenue of growth (personal and building relationships). Itโ€™s my favorite line, too, so thank you again, and you know what they say about great minds ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜! The line is yours! You also make an excellent point: when we can step back and think about the differences that cause tension, it allows us to understand better that if we can set our ego aside, we can step closer and have a better connection. This summer was a good one, and although I spent less time back home than I wished, it was great to spend time with family, especially Riley and Annalise (and their parents, my sister and bro-in-law). Overall, it was just a great time. I think you must be getting excited about the springtime DownUnder that is just around the corner ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Enjoy, and I look forward to catching up with you more often. Take care.

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

The mind is a powerful thing, capable of guiding us to where we need to be. But also the mind is what plays tricks and illussions. Sometimes it’s hard to trust and have faith in the universe. And maybe the harder thing is to dance between mind and imagination.

Indeed, great minds think alike ๐Ÿ˜„ A little bit of love and compassion to ourselves goes a long way. In understanding and loving ourselves, we see where we stand among others. I do think people want to connect with the authentic versions of ourselves, and that’s when strong connections can be build.

Lovely to hear you had a good time back home. Maybe time for another holiday to visit family and loved ones. Very excited about Spring here, and even more excited for the arrival of Summer. Hugs across the miles to you, Randall ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™โค

Interesting, and nice, how your posts always remind me of some of my favorite quotes and quotations, the lovely ideas they convey, as this beautiful piece of writing too, sending me to that well known selection from John Donne, โ€œNo man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. โ€ฆtherefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.โ€ While paradoxically, yes… we may forever feel isolated and separate, never able to fully reach another fellow being’s inner workings of the mind and heart, which leaves us only the path of deep acceptance that ultimately has its roots in true love.
Lately, though, somehow I have come to truly entertain the thought that we are not really separate from anything and anyone around, on the deepest of levels, or the highestโ€ฆ For once we get to feel our own self and spirit as all-encompassing, or better said infused into everything that is, then it can become easier to reach out to others’ worlds and universes, as there is no actual reaching anymore, only just simply being within that oneness. Perhaps Kahlil Gibran said it best, โ€œIt was but yesterday I thought myself a fragment quivering without rhythm in the sphere of life. Now I know that I am the sphere, and all life in rhythmic fragments moves within me.โ€
I find the very last photos marvelous, Dalo, feel like beauty, love and joy in their purest form.. a sweet togetherness shining in the midst of a golden sunset wheat field. Thank you for yet another wonderful read! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The quote from John Donne is great, and it is a bit funny because I also thought that my veering into the โ€œisland universeโ€ realm was going to make it seem that we are all isolated from each otherโ€ฆ which I think to a great extent we are. However, your quote speaks perhaps the truest truth: we are a piece of a brilliant puzzle. I love the line โ€œโ€ฆtherefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.โ€

The Kahlil Gibran quote also aligns with my thoughts, Nicole. I love the way you are looking at this ๐Ÿ˜. Iโ€™ve been reading a bit about quantum theory, recently a lot more of one theorist, Carlo Rovelli, who while focusing on the quantum realm (and quantum gravity specifically), also writes quite beautifully on the reality we experience daily. We simply are entangled with each other at some level, and I find this very fascinatingโ€ฆ at a scientific level, it is even spiritual. โ€œโ€ฆ all life in rhythmic fragments moves within me.โ€

Thank you, Nicole, very much for the comments on the photos of Riley and Annalise. They were taken behind my parents’ house in the wheat fields of Pendletonโ€ฆ and the setting summer sun was perfectly cooperative ๐Ÿ™‚. And thank you again for such an insightful, thought-provoking comment. I hope you are having a wonderful finish to your summer in Romania. It has been ๐Ÿ”ฅ in Czechia, but we are grateful for the small rain storms that refresh us! Cheers, and take care.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply, Christine. It was a bit of a challenge when I first started this post writing about โ€˜island universesโ€™ but reflecting on life and how important it is to build bridges with others continually โ€“ it became a fun challenge. Sometimes, it isn’t easy to connect with others without miscommunication, but a creative mind helps in the process. As for the abstract paintings, they are not mine, but I appreciate them. Thank you very much, Sue. There is a lot of truth to the saying ‘no man’s an island’ as the only way to truly enjoy and learn/evolve is through others. One of the brilliant things about summer I enjoy so much is meeting so many people out, enjoying nature, and being grateful for being able to enjoy the outdoors this time of year. 16. Dave Ply Avatar

Some nice nuggets in this one, a couple of which trigger thought.

“… and we have shared empathy, but the only place that holds certainty for me is the universe in my mind.” I think for many, even the universe of their mind doesn’t hold enough certainty. They’ll fill the gaps of those doubts with whatever they can. Often, religion steps in, or any other source that might provide a feel for what’s right – even if it makes no rational sense or defies ethics. I’d guess as you’ve delved the depths of philosophy and hunted down the goblins in some of those gaps, you have more certainty. Others, I suspect, would be afraid to try. Or maybe simply too lazy. It’s easier to follow tribe think.

“Admitting to the possibility of a different way of thinking and solving a problem, we embrace this responsibility. From this comes wisdom.” That’s an excellent definition of wisdom, and later, of love. Some folks want to build bridges, others, to build walls. That sums up a lot of conflict in a nutshell.

    Beautiful pictures, as always.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Great reply, Dave. Yesterday, a friend and I talked about how similar people generally are in terms of what they need and what is available (I think that is especially true in the USA). But as you mention, because of uncertainty, some people cling to divisive squawking from another source (in my discussion yesterday, it was politicians and con artists) to ‘fill those gaps,’ as you say. Very insightful thought, and thank you for the clarity. It is often the easier path to accept the beliefs of others, in that it doesn’t require much effort, rather than diving deeper into the real issues. As you say, it’s easier to follow tribe thinking. Building bridges takes work, effort, and a lot of courage to make it all work. Cheers to the remaining days of summer, and I wish you and yours the best as we close in on autumn. Take care ~

Just moments ago I was replying to a comment on my blog where both myself and the commenter were remarking about the impossibility of totally knowing someone. I like your use of island to describe the inner contours.

It is funny you mention the words you shared with your friend ~ I had a similar situation where, after I wrote my draft, a friend said while they thought they knew me well, it is impossible to know anyone. It was a bit serendipitous. The lyric you chose from the U2 song One fits perfectly. We are one, but we get to carry each other… a beautiful thought. Thank you, Linda, for the wonderful comment.

A friend of mine and a friend of his once found themselves very much surprised to have exchanged bodies ~ my friend was looking out through his friend’s eyes, and vice versa. They both had the same experience before returning to their own bodies, and that was that our separate islands come all the way down to the five senses. Everything not only felt different, but looked, sounded and smelled different. There’s a reason police investigators are prepared seldom to hear two identical witness statements at the same scene…

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

In a world of many different islands of thought and cultures, it is always a gift when we get a genuine peak into another. I wish you well, Ana, and a beautiful autumn ahead. Take care ~

I’ve come to realize that gratitude is the key that can open any lock. Gratitude happens without effort, with no training required. A beautiful sunset, a beautiful flower, a beautiful person. If our mind is quiet and we pay attention we find that we are naturally grateful for all of these.

As journalist Germany Kent said: It’s a funny thing about life, once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.

Right now, I’m grateful for such a beautiful post. Thank you.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I like the way you mention and describe gratitude. It is derived naturally, as you say, without effort. A view of autumn, as your last post describes both in words and photos, is such a feeling where all the noise is drowned out by the beauty of what is in front of us. Each day, we see beauty and for those wonderful souls who impact our lives – being grateful for those surrounding us makes life much more special. It is the key to a life worth living, and I hope always to keep sight of it, but know whenever I do lose sight of it, all I need is to step back and be grateful for what I have. Cheers to a beautiful autumn, and thank you for the insightful comment.

I really like the way that you moved through the individual, personal inner universe to that sharing of two with Annalise and Riley. Your essay forms a nice tribute and hopeful start to the idea of separate oneness. In marriage you have to give space to both the island of inner self and the archipelgo that we all sail between in joining lives.

I do wish my own inner universe were more calm and less stressed with cycling thoughts sometimes. But, the camera helps open a portal to a clear perspective and view of a subject or landscape and serves to calm and declutter. And, the pen serves to convey in the best words you can those emotions and thoughts. I think the pen forces definition because you have to choose words that enable others and even yourself to better see that landscape of thought. Like a dream trace it can be ephemeral and hard to hold.

I love your always positive outlook and openess to the world’s beauty…obvious in your essay’s and pictures!! Makes me feel a tad lifted each time!!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you for the beautiful comment, Judy. Seeing Riley and Annalise together is something special; seeing two people bound together by the wonders of life, love, and youth is a great thing.

For a few years, I’ve pondered the ability to mesh the inner universe with outside reality for a few years. Our artistic releases, be it photography, writing, sports, or any hobby, are perfect vehicles to mesh the two into something peaceful. Although everyday stress does have a way of throwing things out of balance, strangely, that too is part of the “fun” of the journey. I like how you describe such ideas and thoughts, “Like a dream trance, it can be ephemeral and hard to hold.” There is so much beauty in the world to experience, and it is nice to let go of thoughts that tend to pull us elsewhere. Cheers to a great autumn ahead!

      1. Judy Avatar

That will be my resolution into the new year I think…getting better at letting go the daily stresses and working out a better schedule for exploration. I’ve been somewhat consumed by work tasks that ought to be much more settled after “open enrollment” in my son’s biz. Look forward to a new nesting season here in South Florida. December gets interesting with quite a bit of posturing and getting into mating garb, but February is actually the beginning of prime time at the rookery!! So happy that the best of birding coincides with cooler weather!!!

Look forward to your next missive!

I love the pictures of your nephew and fiance amidst those golden fields of wheat. There is nothing quite like going back to one’s rural roots and be among family and friends. Where we come from has such a huge impact on who we are and where we are going, so I can understand how this contrast between your past and present can inspire such philosophical musings. This post holds so many truths, I just kept nodding as I was reading. I particularly love the Huxley quote. “We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves.” So much of our lives happen in the interior, and even when we grapple for words to build the connections with others, so much of what we try to express can get lost. But it is perhaps the acceptance that we can never fully understand others, or even ourselves that make us more compassionate and patient, as we all try to navigate this world filled with island universes.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Agree wholeheartedly! The sights and sounds of home will always make the heart beat a little faster and make it easier to reconcile our present to our past (and for me, with the mind always looking forward to the future). Being able to understand how differences can be embraced – something to learn from – is something I did not have in my younger years, but one of the most valuable traits we can learn in life. The Huxley quote has been one Iโ€™ve thought about for decades, and was happy to be able to put it to use in a way where I think I even ended up understanding this concept better ๐Ÿ˜.ย

Connections are so difficult to form and maintain, and I can see how past failures in relationships resulted from the inability of both sides to understand the other fully. As you say, the inability to fully understand ourselves should be a sign that we cannot understand another very well, so compassion and patience are vital. Thank you for the thoughtful and insightful comment. Enjoy the weekend ahead. ย  ย

I loved this piece in all its wisdom and compassion. I like the idea of island universes, and that when we really understand and remember that we simply cannot truly know how it is for another, nor they for us, it must lead inevitably to a kind of bowing down, a mix of humility and compassion. Just lovely Dalo. And of course your photos are gorgeous.

    Alison

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you, Alison. A particular burden is lifted when realizing it is impossible to understand another. Instead of anger, empathy and compassion put me in a better frame of mind. It helps either understand the person better or to move forward, holding onto a more optimistic outlook. Granted, the imperfect beings we are, moods can still dictate the day ๐Ÿ˜Š! I hope the beginning of autumn is treating you well ~ take care.ย

  32. equinoxio21 Avatar

A great post as always. I’m glad to see you’re (or were) back home. Home is the mooring dock of one’s universes.

Food for thought. I wonder whether all those internal universes are the “non-being” of the Tao? Still struggling with that. Or maybe “non-being” is really “other being”?

I think I have mentioned Hannah Arendt before. (I’m beginning to repeat myself). She wrote (more or less) that each human being has to reinvent the world. There is no transmission of past/others’ knowledge, experience. (And you point out very well that we can only imagine what other people’s experiences can be.)

As I was reading your text I had an image of old math concepts. A union B, A Intersection C… (I don’t know how to get the symbols on my Mac, but I think you know what I mean.) In our interactions with others, we don’t have any of those. Just a touching. Imagine to circles, A and B. They don’t intersect, they don’t merge. The circles just touch. And that is fair enough.

Best wishes to you nephew Riley and Annalise. Life is wonderful but it is also tough… They will need all the strength and love they have to trod along…

And all the best to you my friend…

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

This is an interesting take on the Dao, Brian, and I think you are onto something. We work within our island universe within the mind. If we approach reality/the world with simplicity, patience, and compassion – empathy for others and simply going with the flow, it allows us to grow and evolve. And this is beautifully descriptive of Daoist thought ๐Ÿ˜‡. Understanding the world is dynamic and constantly changing/evolving. We realize this and are more willing not to hold onto anything that disrupts the harmony and flow of a good life.

I will have to read Hannah Arendt. Youโ€™ve mentioned her before, and since then, Iโ€™ve noticed her name pop up quite a bit in my reading. She may be next on my reading list (which seems to be growing more than ever). Yes, life is not easy, but part of the brilliance of family and friends is having people there for moments of stumble or failure, which gives us the courage to continue the chase no matter how bad things get. As you say, such love gives us all the strength to continue to trod along ๐Ÿค .ย It is great to hear from you, Brian, and to clear the cobwebs this Saturday after a week that seemed full of Mondays ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Cheers to a great autumn ahead – it is mushroom season here in Czechia, and they are as delicious as beautiful. ย

      1. equinoxio21 Avatar

Hi Dalo. Thanks for pursuing the reflection on the Dao. (Just gave an idea for a post. Tentative title: “Into the non-being.” Let’s see where it takes me.
Sorry about the Monday-full week. Sun comes out after the rain I guess. Which may sound trite but is a fact. Just a matter of patience.
Glad you’re still in Czechia. If your next post is from Lebanon, then you would definitely be “State”. LOL)
Hannah Arendt. No matter how long your reading list may be, start with “The human condition”. Simply brilliant. I might re-read it some day…
Also just bought “End of times” By Turchin. Let’s see what he tells us about the Chaos to come…
        Be good.

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you for the recommendation. Iโ€™ll order a copy of The Human Condition and look forward to reading it. Also, I look forward to your potential Daoist post; it holds much to think about. Czechia in the fall is beautiful and always full of energy. Would love to head to Lebanon, but the visions I have about the country are more than 100 years old, when it was the heart of culture, art, and imagination. It is depressing how life in the Middle East has devolved so much over the past decades. I wish you well, Brian, and thanks again!

      3. equinoxio21 Avatar

Well, I just finished writing the post… ๐Ÿ˜ณ Not sure it’s a very serious way to write about non-being, but I must say I opened my mind and the story came. Fun was never banned frm Daoism was it?
Lebanon… Alas. I also just wrote a post on Lebanon in 1967. Around a movie my mother shot when we went to Lebanon. My parents and I have had many Lebanese friends. Wonderful people. It seems amazing how a country of such amazing people could have fallen so low… The story of mankind I guess.
I can imagine Czechia in the Fall. Forests, hills or mountains, rivers and lakes… Central Europe must be beautiful too in general…
Enjoy the Fall Dalo. Take care.

Your photos are awe-inspiring and inspirational Randall, perfectly illustrating deep thought and connections. I believe we’re all here to learn about the world and ourselves in our own special ways, which means we are all isolated in our minds, but connected by those bridges we make to the world and to others.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you very much, Andrea. Over time, we realize the world is diverse and exciting; engaging in it is how we evolve. Isolation and lack of understanding are behind a lot of the hate & extremist action in the world today. I agree with you; continually creating bridges is the only way to connect and learn more about life. I wish you continued success as we move into autumn. Cheers ~ย

As always stunning visuals that weaves perfectly with deep reflections. So many nuggets of wisdom here. โ€˜ If there ever was a bridge between my inner universe and reality, it may begin when I pick up my camera and penโ€™ and I think this is what draws us to blogging and what your blog so perfectly encapsulates – the mesmerising ability to present the connection between your internal world to the outside reality and all the richness of it. Thanks for an enriching post always!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

That is a beautiful comment, and I thank you for the thoughtfulness. The one constant between my inner universe and outside reality is usually some form of art or creativity. It acts as a vehicle for us to make sense of what we see looking out, and then, in return, gives the outside a little bit of insight into who we are. The number of times I fail at this is not small, but it is well worth it when connections happen. Cheers to you, and I wish you a fantastic autumn ahead. ย

Beautifully said, with the kind of wisdom that comes only with age and experience. So many island universes swirling around one another…and yet we find so many connections, points of contact, sparks of mutuality. For me, being in/with nature has always been the ultimate home, the reassurance I know I can count on. That connection feels true and confident. It’s a gift I tried to give my son and one I think he will instill in his little boys. But what a world it is, crazier with every day. Congrats to your nephew. I hope you all continue to enjoy life. An intriguing read, Randall. You’re exploring one of the greatest mysteries – our solitary minds and how we connect to other humans. I loved what you said about “what others think of us are pure figments of imagination.” What goes on in our heads is based on our sole reality and the stories we tell ourselves! You brought it around to the important connections we make with family and friends. I’m so happy for you that you will be gaining a new niece. My nephew’s brand new daughter is named Annalise. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m a “grauntie” many times over. Your portraits of the happy couple are spectacular with the sunstar and wheat field – bravo! Hope all is well with you! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you, Jane. It is funny, as the one line you mentioned: “What goes on in our heads is based on our sole reality and the stories we tell ourselves!” It is one of those relatively simple thoughts that can be almost revolutionary when put into practice, whether with work or life in general. The world can be a simple place, and I think it is made even easier, as you allude to, when you are fortunate enough to have the presence of a fantastic family to share with. Take care, and I wish you and your family (especially Annalise ๐Ÿ˜Š) a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

There is a lot here, Randall. So much beauty, so much depth. Contemplation…

You really got me with the following:

“Iโ€™m content with the knowledge I will never fully understand who they are, as they will never fully understand me. It is unsurprising, as I have yet to understand much about myself.”

It spoke to me so profoundly. And yet, there are so many people who never even try to understand others…or themselves for that matter. It is a journey filled with many questions and if we are able to answer even a few, I think we are on the right track.

As always, I simply adore the way you marry your incredibly beautiful photographs with your deepest thoughts that come out in poetry!!

Thank you very much, Lorrie. One of the simplest things people can do is realize how little we understand about ourselves, so giving a lot of leeway to others is important, especially when making judgments can come so quickly to me ๐Ÿ˜! I imagine that you’re familiar with the poet John O’Donohue (Anam Cara) who writes about the universe within and how we will never truly know another or be fully known. He describes it a loneliness, and that the longing of life is to come as close as we can to that knowing connection. I love how you describe it, full of grace and positivity and a wonderful reason for passionate curiosity. What better journey through our brief lives than to build bridges (with your camera and pen). Beautiful photos of Riley and Annalise as they set out on one of life’s great adventures. A lovely share.
