The Ghosts of Tai O

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-1

Stepping out onto the verandah, a strong feeling of déjà vu sweeps over me. I breathe in the early morning air of the sleepy fishing village of Tai O, the sound of the water inviting me out to explore.

The purity of silence only a pre-dawn sky can provide, accompanies me as I walk down a path toward the shore of the South China Sea.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-2

A restless purr of a yellow cat holding sentry duty catches my attention, she gives me a quick look-over before closing her eyes and nodding approval to pass.

Clearing the path, I continue down along the shore of the Tai O Heritage Hotel.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-3

Sleep last night was worthless. The building kept whispering stories and secrets to me from a century long ago.  Words with a personal ring, the whispers of long-lost friends.

My mind races at the possibilities, whether I am a dreamer caught up in a turn-of-the-century drama, or whether the history of this place holds a reality I am now just becoming aware.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-4

Standing on the shore, I expected to see a fleet of Chinese junks flying the flag of a renegade pirate; a flag supposedly designed by myself. To my relief the shore is empty and I chuckle at the thought of what I would have done if it wasn’t.

My dreams of the night, vivid creations of the rich history of this place.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-5

Crouching down, I pick up a stone and toss it out into the water as I hear a faint foghorn of a ship out on the horizon. I have finally made it to one of the oldest and most secluded areas of Hong Kong.

When I first arrived in Hong Kong almost two decades ago I had targeted this fishing village to be one of my first adventures, but time and life got in the way.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-6

She is an old fishing village, one that has definitely seen better days.  Today Tai O is more of a hangout for older people in their 70s, desperately holding onto the good life of saltwater and the sea.

Younger souls fresh in their 20s and 30s are also around, looking lost amid a modern world that has little room for the craftsmanship of fishermen.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-7

Above me is the old police station, an outpost of the Hong Kong and British maritime police, where officers actively protected these shores from centuries of pirates and smuggling.

Stories that fueled the dreams from last night, still reverberating in my mind as I begin walking down the road ~ returning to a place I have long forgotten.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-8

Less than twelve hours ago, Tai O was just a figment of my imagination, a chaotic myth of the old days of Hong Kong. I now find myself walking effortlessly under an early morning sky as if I were born on these streets.

I walk with purpose, with an understanding of what I am looking for even though my mind is filled with confusion.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-9

The memories are fresh. The old stilt houses, the planks leading from one neighbor to another and the wild activity that made up a day.

Blurred images of friends laughing and enjoying the serene atmosphere of the night, forgetting the dangers that filled our hearts every evening as we’d head out to sea for work.

Work. Not quite the type of work that would make most families proud, but work nonetheless.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-10

The police station in Tai O is no longer here, having shut down over fifteen years ago, but the building still stands just as it did when built by the British in 1902.  Now a beautiful building, fitted out by the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation to become the Tai O Heritage Hotel.

I smile at the thought that at least I have a more comfortable bed than those who spent a night in the holding cell a century ago.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-11

The building was home to one of the territories first colonial police stations guarding the western border between Hong Kong and China, and holding pieces of history that are now all but forgotten.

Reflecting back on the dream that woke me during the night, I wonder if it is a reminder of the role I filled as a noble Hong Kong policeman serving this village more than a century ago?

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-12

The answer to this question is obvious to me, as the sense of nostalgia tells me this definitely was not the case. I was living a darker, very different life.

I realized this the minute I arrived at the hotel. The electricity I felt as my fingers brushed over the nine bullet holes embedded into the security shutters on the main floor of the hotel, telling me this was not just a chance meeting in Tai O.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-13

I admire the historians and renovators who kept the original shutters, damaged and scarred but holding a place in time at the police station. Trapping the memories of those days gone by.

Years earlier, there was another piece of violence all but forgotten.  A firefight on these shores more than one hundred years ago.  Faded shots and screams still echoing in the air.  The ghosts, waiting for my return, now stand alongside me as I walk these streets. The voices of my dreams earlier tonight are with me once again.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-14

I weave through the different paths, looking around aimlessly for something I once called home.   Familiarity is all around me, but I am very out-of-place.

There is an urge for me to call out names and shout good morning in a strange Chinese dialect I have never heard before, much less spoken.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-15
  • The water.
  • The houses.
  • The sea.

The strong smell of shrimp paste, dried fish and scallops fill the air and tell me a story I cannot quite remember.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-16

I am trapped in a time and place, where there isn’t a clear definition between good and bad. Where answering the question of how to make a living was never considered. Just one path, one fate.

A life, where evolution of the soul and mind did not come easy, if at all, unlike the freedoms I have today.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-17

Caught up in the spirit of adventure on the South China Sea; a pirate’s life.  A fantasy of many young kids growing up in those days.  Romanticizing life in way only a child can, inevitably to be disappointed in its reality.

Decisions made from necessity, poorly thought out and running with a band of marauders between Tai O and Mainland China, a life of survival with no way out.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-18

The excitement of the chase, the beauty of the culture and memories of her many smiles, all combine to justify the clash between lifestyle and philosophy.  The stories and secrets whisper to me yet again.

Words that did not make much sense back then, even less so now.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-19

The ending of this dream is not a surprising one. Over a century ago on these very shores, violence ended my story. The image strong in my mind.  Of myself, a dying man.

My final thoughts questioning if somewhere, somehow in another time or place I could have travelled down another road.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-24

History is this great mirror able to show us a different time, different place and different potential in us all as we find our way in life.

I see a faint image of a wife and child standing alone. A twinge of sorrow fills my heart, my eyes moving to a basket of dried shrimp she’s holding, igniting another memory from so long ago.  Their whispers silently fading away as they bid me adieu.

The Ghosts of Tai O Village ~ Hong Kong-23

We are all more alike than we could ever understand.  Rich or poor, young or old, the vast differences we see on the surface means nothing.

Build a life worth living, so when the inevitable day of death arrives, we know our life was one fully lived ~ a life worth dying for.

Good morning, Randall. So happy to see you have a new post today. Beautiful photos and… the next second I knew, I was in your dream too. You have the magic to bring your readers into a different world!
What is that orange round thing on 12th photo? Egg yolk?
    Have a great day!

    1. rommel Avatar

      Same question? 😀

      1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Rommel, first time I ever saw these I too wondered if they were a type of fruit or something. Salted duck egg yokes, which are great in different Chinese dishes 🙂

    2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ah, it was so nice to see you in my dreams 🙂 The orange round thing are salted duck egg yolks ~ really pretty good (e.g. in porridge or moon cakes) 🙂 Wish you a great week Helen!

I see what you did – interweaving modern buildings with the rural environment, and then you talked of the past, the now and the feelings in between. 🙂 Brilliance! Know you are living a full life, Randall. You find meaning in different walks of life, in all the right and wrong places. 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Past, present, future ~ at times I think there is not much of a difference expect perception. We may find ourselves in a totally different situation, but in a sense we remain who we are 🙂 Aways finding meaning in life, and you are right in either right or wrong places! Cheers to a great coming week ~

What an overwhelming story. It stirs up a strange mix of emotions in me. It is as if I can feel the nostalgia with you, the silence of Tai-O with a dash of spirit.
The photos you click are mirrors to the moments you capture – they reflect the emotion, the mood so effectively, it is easy to get caught up in them and see the place like you did, in person, breathing it in.
Tai-O seems like what I would call a ‘culture pocket’, where you get to experience the rich culture first-hand but with time, it is being confined to a smaller geographical area which is unfortunate. I wish there was a way to keep the culture alive with a more inclusive plan. And a way to make more and more people involved in the process.
Thank you for narrating this story to us, Randall. You never cease to amaze me.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

You’d love Tai O Meghna, just as you say there is an unmistakable nostalgia anyone can feel and your comment of a “culture pocket” is spot on. It is a place, as with others in similar circumstances, becoming extinct. The salt marshes and salt panning is no longer there. The folks sticking around are too old for the work, and the young ones headed off into the city for work… Very, very happy you enjoyed the story ~ thank you!

Wonderful, heart-stirring ghosts, coming to share their stories with your incredible skill both of word-weaving and picture clicking. Absolutely stunning presentation Randall. I love the way you have made a refreshing story about an old, forgotten village, evoking all those images of water, land and sky…the moon and the sun – the silent but shining spectators! It would be an understatement to say that this is one of your best presentations.
Thank you for sharing such a mesmerising work.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

“The silent but shining spectators…” I love that line, and I have to say Tai O surprised me in terms of the history and perseverance of the people and community. The quietness of the mornings there made me think of how nice growing up in such a place would be (in a sense similar to my home town). Thank you very much for this great comment, makes my day Balroop. Wishing you the best ~

Love 💛💙💜 these photos and your magical dream, the cat made me think of my blog friend Yellow Cable and the orange yokes? Are so vibrant. The ducks head on the cooking platter is an unusual sight. I also wonder how the stilt houses don’t rot in the water and crumble, it is a whole new world to me. Fascinating

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Wonderful comment Charlotte, a perfect way to start the week for me…you’d love it in Tai O, I could imagine you singing Chinese opera here one day 🙂 ~ truly a great look into this amazing world. Cheers ~

Another excellent post! The history of the police station and the nighttime sounds fill one’s imagination. Tricia and I have yet to visit Hong Kong, but with images like these it is easier to plan a trip for sooner, rather than later. After all, a life of travel in the pursuit of wisdom is a life worth pursuing. 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

A perfect line I could not agree more with “a life of travel in the pursuit of wisdom is a life worth pursuing” If you and Tricia make it to Hong Kong, I think you both would enjoy a night at Tai O and the Heritage Hotel ~ it perfect sums up your wise words 🙂 Cheers ~

“History is this great mirror able to show us a different time, different place and different potential in us all as we find our way in life.” Your story is moving and haunting. I believe we can feel these energies and dream of the past. These buildings and rivers hold the energy and stories from many years ago and can teach us wisdom and a different understanding of life. You have captured these stories in your photos and made them real for us today. Thankyou.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

You’ve chosen one of my favorite lines Karen … I’ve never really understood the many different perspectives that life can offer, and it is wisdom we can take and use today and tomorrow. Thank you ~

  22. Malcolm Greenhill Avatar

There is not much that can be done with a fading way of life, however colorful, is there? I’m glad they are trying to maintain the buildings as they were. It shows they care. Your post is actually part of the process of embedding this way of life in our digitized collective memory so that, at least something of it will be accessible to future generations. That look on the old fisherman’s face says it all.

But you Randall, none of us knew you were a pirate in another life with a wife and child and that you met a violent death. Maybe you didn’t know it yourself until now? However we do all know that you are a wonderfully adventurous spirit with a remarkable talent for capturing the poetic beauty of both nature and man.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The fading way of life is part of evolution I suppose, not much we can do about it except take the wisdom from those days and remember. It is always a bit interesting to think how I would have fared back in the day in different places ~ and I couldn’t help but see this side of me 🙂 Very good pick-up and didn’t realize it until the early morning walk in the village. You’d enjoy the hotel there, takes you right back to the colonial history as if it is right outside your door. Thank you Malcolm, and wish you the best ~

Beautiful story of the Tai O from the morning till dawn. It invokes imagination and almost like walking along with you to see those things. I have seen many cat pictures over the net but the one you have here will stick with me for a while.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The advantage of getting up so early and walking the streets was the absolute silence, made getting to know the village on an intimate level ~ and I thought of you with the cat photo, so happy you noticed. Tai O has a very large and wonderful cat population. Cheers ~

Tai O is a fascinating place I won’t forget. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay overnight as the hotel was still just an abandoned police station 12 years ago. The way of life – history and present day you so masterfully weave together – left an impression on me. Mesmerizing stories, like the one you tell here with your stunning images, can only be told when one has touched the soul of a place, and felt it breathe. Loved it.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Wow, you were in Tai O when I wish I would have been there, very cool. To have seen the old police station abandoned, that would have been something to see. If you get the chance again, you will be treated to something special at the Heritage Hotel. The soul of Tai O is still alive and well, and I hope it remains unchanged with all the development that tends to steal away such places. Cheers!

These photos are fantastic, Randall. The primary colors are alive inside each image. I can’t take my eyes off them. Stunning. I’m captivated by the inner workings of the structures you’ve shared. What place to be. I’m going to try not to allow my envy to ruin the moment. Your stories always calm me. The whisper I hear, as I listened to your voice, during your dreamy walk is indeed the most soothing. Thank you for such a lovely walk. Your guidance through the unknown was peaceful and incrediblely safe. A life worth living should be built well. This message of yours strives to bring out the best in all of us. Just as you do. Enjoy your week, Dalo. 13 and 16 are currently battling in my head for top image, but then those boats push their way back in. 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The walk was my pleasure ~ so happy you enjoyed it Auddie, and Tai O definitely invites you back for a return 🙂 The village, while struggling with a deteriorating population and trying to recreate itself is still strong in spirit and I think that is why the people from HK like to visit it ~ for the history, seclusion and also the good seafood and simple way of life. Thank you very much for the words and joining me on the walk. Have a great week ~

  34. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Such a reflective piece on the past, present, and the future. Glad you got to revisit this part of Hong Kong again and explore it at your own pace. I got the impression that it was worth it for you. Funny how when we revisit a place – physically or in our thoughts or dreams – it’s never really the same. I’m a big believer in never visiting a place once if I want to uncover it’s stories and the people making a living there – but twice or more. Second time round, I think we sort of question what on earth did we see in the first instance and really, what are we to believe? Maybe at some point we might question that all along we might be hallucinating…

“We are all more alike than we could ever understand.” So true. We might look different but deep down we might share the same feelings and sentiments…and most of us hope to see another day. Great words and stunning photography. One day I hope to take photos like that. Those golden egg yolks reminded me of the days in Malaysia where my mum made salted eggs for dinner as a treat. And those blue-eyed shrimps look delicious. We call them ikin bilis in Malaysia and eat them with coconut rice all the time 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

There is something about Hong Kong history (and the history of SE Asia in general) that is fascinating, so being able to find a place to explore and experience at my own pace was pretty cool. Uncovering such stories does allow us to think back on yesterday and bring everything to the moment right in front of us and get a unique impression. Perhaps even a new belief and understanding of the place. And you are wise to relate this too the food as well ~ the Tai O restaurants are pretty amazing. Thanks Mabel.

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Agree that the history of SE Asia in generally is really interesting in general. Personally, it fascinates me how different and similar this part of the world is today compared to the days when they were colonised.

Honestly, I’ve heard how amazing sunrise looks but I never make it to see sunrise myself. Seeing your mesmerizing sunrise photo made me realize how beautiful sunrise can be. It simply sent me to a world of serene 🙂 The cat picture obviously stole my heart as usual 😀 I’m glad you captured the moment when she closed her eyes (One of the expressions I like to see in cats the most) 😉 Reading your beautiful words while looking at the stunning photos not only took me back to Tai O, but also allowed me to travel from the past to present made it a memorable trip ❤ The more I read, the more I get addicted to it 😛

It was such a memorable trip to Tai O, something I will definitely never forget. Wish you a great week Khloe ~

A fabulous post Randall. Your photographs excellent as always. I’m a huge James Clavell fan and as I read your words I was transported once more to Hong Kong as I was on so many nights as a younster, reading Clavell’s novels. Your photographs have brought alive a place that has hitherto, for the most part, resided in my imagination alone.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Cheers Adrian ~ your comment took me back to the Tai Pan ~ Noble House days that Clavell described so well. His books remain a favorite of mine (in fact, you’ve got me thinking to re-read them!). Yes, the feeling of Tai O allows a soul to slip back to those days quite easily…gets the imagination flowing. A beautiful thing. Thank you very much and happy you enjoyed the journey.

Randall, this was beautiful on so many levels. I have never had the fortune of seeing Tai O in the predawn light, or wandering its narrow alleyways at sunrise. Your photos convey such tranquility, and I loved how you interwove them with the vivid descriptions of your dreams. Clearly the history of the place seeped in while you slept at the old police station. 🙂

The predawn view of Tai O was incredibly serene and it was a joy to see the village slowly come to life, and I was fortunate to have a great day for a sunrise as well. Such places fuel my imagination like no other, and I could spend days just wandering around doing nothing but observing and taking in life & history of the place. In fact, I think such vacations where I do such things are often my favorite types and definitely relaxing. And yes, sleeping at the old police station definitely helped 🙂 Cheers to a great week James ~

You are able to write authentically about EVERYTHING. Your soul included.
Juicy bits of life and consistent style. Capturing how you do express yourself is always incredible. I want to read more, and more…. and more!
Your photography?? Oh, please… “Fly me to the moon and back” :). No, fly me to Tai O and leave me there for a while; I want to SEE and feel that places as well as you did.

    Thank you.

What an incredible comment Luana ~ isn’t that the basis of who we all could and should be, listening to that authentic side of ourselves. You do that so well in your posts, take a hold of life and living it. Seems there is nothing better than taking in the world around us (past, present, future) and making a great day of it. Tai O is right here waiting for you ~ just say the word 🙂

-What an incredible person – you – are.
-I would say “the word”, but you don’t need to hear it.

Lovely photo essay — I’ve added it to our queue of posts for Freshly Pressed (it might take a while, perhaps a week, for it to appear).

My husband and I visited this village when we were in Hong Kong in December/January and I enjoyed walking around. I also liked a little cafe along the water called Cafe Solo, which was an interesting space — it felt out of place, but also fresh and lively — and I was reminded of it when you wrote that Tai O is an old village for older people, while younger souls are also there, lost in a modern world. Lovely words. Thank you.

Yes, had a great cup of coffee later that morning at Cafe Solo ~ it was the perfect unwinding place before I headed back to my home in the afternoon. Tai O is a great contrast to what most people think of when it comes to Hong Kong ~ great that you two were able to visit and get the experience. A very unique place, and also very happy to hear this post will be Freshly Pressed, very cool and thank you Cheri, wish you a great week.

The lighting and vivid colors of your photographs and the weaving of your words into a story create an atmosphere I can feel but have no words to describe. Splendid and hypnotic is as close as I get.. 🙂

There is nothing quite like a nice sunrise/sunset to set a great scene for lighting and to bring out an atmosphere of creativity ~ add that to the history of Tai O and it was a pretty fun time 🙂 Thank you ~

Ghost towns and guardian cats, there is something equally enticing about both. Besides reading, traveling is the only other outlet I have discovered which allows me to get a glimpse into other lives lived at other times….

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Very true, it does seem to be the perfect pieces of when we travel and/or read, that we are taken to a new place for a short time, and are allowed to see a different culture and history. So much to see and learn ~ everywhere, even our home towns for that matter.

Randall, congratulations on being chosen for Freshly Pressed, well-deserved and about time. A wonderful post as always – the photography is wonderful, the prose even more so. Always happy to see you come up in my inbox as I know I’m in for another treat !

This was a pretty neat place ~ such history, and I had been wanting to go there for a longest time to see that glimpse of HK life that is no longer around. It was fun and the place made it easier to create the photos and stories. Wishing you a great weekend Tina, thank you.

Ah, shrimp paste. I can remember my eyes watering for the first several days i stayed in Da Nang as across the road from the house were people making this delicacy. It is so powerful. They were amazed that I found it interesting and seemed to enjoy all the photos they kindly allowed me to take.
I may never get to China but I do love seeing it through your eyes. Merci beaucoup!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Yes, the fragrant shrimp paste is one that will stay with me for quite a while ~ it is something else (I jokingly thought it would make a great perfume…). It is quite good with fried rice, but as I learned only in moderation. 🙂 Da Nang, I bet that must have been something to see, and another reason for me to checkout that part of Vietnam. Merci beaucoup Léa, bonne journee!

I spent a month traveling around Vietnam with a friend who was from Da Nang and still has family there. It was all amazing! Merci and I really enjoy your posts!
