The Endurance of Tacloban: Heart of the Philippines

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -35

Violent winds swirl the dark, ominous thunderclouds overhead. The pounding waves crash onto the rocky shore and the roar of the Pacific Ocean makes its intention clear: thrash anything in its path.

With electricity in the air, I am oblivious to everything except the power coming my way as rain beats against my face, sucking me into the depths of the storm.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -33

Ever since I was young, the powerful forces of storms, especially on the Oregon Coast, have held a rare type of electricity for me.  Electricity that excites my soul and eliminates any trace of fear I may have.

Chasing the idea of becoming one with the storm.  Not just to see the power unravel in front of me, but to physically feel this rare electricity.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -3

The past three days I’ve experienced a different type of feeling.

Walking along the Tacloban city coastline watching the sunrise, I am beginning to understand the other side of this “rare electricity” I feel when Mother Nature unleashes her fury ~ the distress and chaos she creates.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -10

Understanding why hearts quicken to a point of exhaustion when thunder clasps and wind and rain fill the sky.

Understanding why there is no glint of excitement in the eyes as a storm brews, instead only an endless sadness: a mix of memories and dread.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -41

The eyes of the children of Tacloban carry terrifying memories and fear from last year; introduced to them on November 8, 2013.

This was the day when super-typhoon Yolanda unleashed her fury on the quiet city of Tacloban in the Philippines. On that dark day, more than 6,000 people died. 11 million lives were directly affected, 5.9 million of those children.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -30

As I stand here this morning on a beach outside the city, surrounded by a special kind of darkness found only within the hour of dawn, my mind drifts back to that day one year ago.

Thoughts drift to a stunned family, who sat in their makeshift home as the seawater entered and refused to retreat.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -32

My mind trying to imagine the panic in the eyes of every family member, as the power of the current made the threat of the rising sea even more terrifying.

And as the hours passed, the surge of water would rise to over six feet, easily destroying homes and buildings… and well before then, the family would have been swept away by the sea.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -13

These are the eyes that are now teaching me.  Allowing me to see a side of nature that can bring the strongest spirit down to its knees.

These eyes also inspire. Having seen what the people of Tacloban have done over the past year brings to life the words of William Barclay:

“Endurance is not just the ability to bear a hard thing,

but to turn it into glory”

The people here have endured…

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -12

On this December morning, I find myself in Tacloban with Save the Children on one of those rare, magical experiences that life offers.

The visit has shown the devastation typhoon Yolanda brought upon this area and the great effort that Save the Children has made in rebuilding lives.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -9

Trying to wrap my mind around what has happened here is almost futile, but I am learning.

The goal of this trip was to witness not just the rebuilding of structures, but also understand the post-recovery training programs.  Programs to ensure lifelong change for the children, their families and communities.

  • Training teachers and leaders of communities
  • Supporting access to quality child care and development

And most important: teaching skills that can turn the hopes and dreams of children into reality.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -7

The genuine smiles have tugged at the heartstrings throughout the past three days and seeing the recovery program has been brilliant. There is something special here, apart from the shared tragedy there is a kindred spirit that mirrors the beauty of the land ~ the people here are creating a paradise.

Tacloban Philippines Save-the-Children-47

What has been done is incredible and with continued support it will become a miracle.  I walk away from Tacloban inspired.  The memory of sitting down and talking to these beautiful, young minds full of dreams is unforgettable.

This beautiful city along with Save the Children has made me believe there are such things as guardian angels.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -22

Looking out toward the sea, I feel a touch of sadness as the sun rises on my last day in Tacloban.  Turning and walking along the shore, I watch a man sitting in the bow of his boat working on a repair.

He gives me a nod along with a faint smile as I bring my camera up for a shot. He pauses, looks out into the distance and his lighthearted expression seems to take on a sense of melancholy.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -34

I’ve learned that along this small section of the coast, everyone lost someone in the typhoon last year. Hunkering down in flimsy shelters with the belief that the waters that gave life would never be cruel enough to turn on them; to reach out and take life as it did.

Walking through town, there are heart-wrenching and strong memories everywhere.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -19

Throughout Tacloban are gutted buildings, piles of rubble and stark reminders for all to see.

What is most painful and can seize the heart, are the small things that at first seem insignificant ~ until its significance hits.  Another reminder of the lives lost during that dark day.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -36

I try not to let my imagination and emotions get the best of me, but fail. I’ve read accounts of the struggles of the Tacloban community; families with wounds that will never be fully healed.  Local photographer Orlando Uy captures many emotions of his city in his photo-blog “A Walk With My Camera”.

These memories are everywhere: pain multiplied by thousands, as loved ones were swept away. My admiration and respect goes out to the people here who live with these daily reminders.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -25

The trauma and helplessness created by Yolanda now takes a back seat to the rebuilding of communities.  The creation of a future for themselves and for their children.

It is stirring to see the locals understand the opportunity they have. To embrace organizations like Save the Children, helping lay the framework for a lifelong investment into their future.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -1

The future of Tacloban is similar to the future of cities scattered all over the globe: it lies with the children.

During my stay, I learned the motto of Save the Children in times of emergency: “children can’t wait” as children are the one part of the population that are most vulnerable in times of turmoil.

Tacloban Philippines Save the Children Yolanda -17

Seeing the ability of both the people of Tacloban and the workers at Save the Children, there is no doubt that this area will quickly bloom with laughter and happiness.

Witnessing the effective use of donations, my faith in human compassion and spirit has grown even further. I’ve long believed that the greatest gift an adult can give a child is happiness.

In return, the greatest gift a child can give us all is a smile.

Very moving post Randall. Thanks for helping me understand and see the impact in a compassionate way. I imagine it is hard not to feel overwhelmed at times for the families and volunteers. I’m glad that Save the Children is helping to rebuild the community.
Thanks for caring and sharing it is such a gentle way. Sending prayers to the many children and families…

Thanks Brad, it was incredible place to see: incredible people (happiness is their culture), which at times made it is easy to feel overwhelmed especially with everyone is such great spirits. To see such struggles is always difficult, and the recovery is a slow process, but good-steady progress. Wish you well ~ Cheers.

Oh, the resiliency the human spirit, especially in children. The less people have materially, the greater their spirit. It heartens me to see how an organization such as Save the Children can make such a profound difference in lives. All the more so because I have become jaded and cynical by the greed and corruption of many of our worlds leaders. Great post and wonderful portraits.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Ron, and I couldn’t say it better myself: “The less people have materially, the greater their spirit”, and the more I live the more I am convinced of the same. Tacloban is a perfect case study of just this, tremendous people who have so little, yet their culture is based on happiness ~ from the US to HK to the Philippines, the Filipinos I know tend to have an abundance of happiness in their soul. Cheers!

I totally agree! Every Filipino I have ever met (a lot) has had a lightness of heart, smiled and laughed a lot more than the average person. By chance have you been to Huizhou, mainland China? I spent 8 months there teaching English in 2004. Your photos are breathtaking! What a life-changing experience. Thank you for sharing. Huizhou, ha ~ yes, when I first started up over in HK use to travel to that area often (now its all up north). An incredible experience you must have had ~ fantastic…你好吗?Cheers!

You captured the tragedy, melancholy, endurance and hope in a way that tugs my soul strings. I worked side by side with Save the Children when I was in Ethiopia. It’s a great organization, capable of bringing back hope where there is none – and smiles that come straight from the heart. Thank you for sharing this moving experience.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Every day was a bit emotional in Tacloban, and I really was impressed by the Save the Children team ~ they really do make the magic happen. To hear you worked with them in Ethiopia must bring back great memories for you ~ and admire you for such an experience. Thank you Tiny, wish you the best.

  12. Audrey Dawn - Oldest Daughter Redheaded Sister Avatar

It is my belief, Randall, that with this post you have proven not only how big your heart is, but also how enormous the heart is of the Tacloban community. I would say city, but you’ve left me overwhelmed with their strength, which affects how a group of people will be perceived by readers, as you’ve expressed so perfectly.

A brave community of folks who have not only survived a storm, but also the trama it creates. My heart goes out to them. Save The Children will continue to be one of the most worthy fights in our lifetime. I for one, see the need and continue to do my part. I hope others will, too. There are so many ways to become involved and we should do just that, I believe.

I find your opportunity to be there a blessing for both of you and the Save The Children organization.

Photo #13 is such a humbling image. May he forever be kept in my mind as a reminder. To do more for that melancholy stare…it reaches into my heart and tugs fiercely.

I can only imagine what your take away has been after being surrounded by such devistation. I also sense your enthusiasm, as you capture the look of joy in the eyes of the children who see hope again, because of the help they have seen and know must be inevitable. I see a reflection on those faces full of beautiful faith and I adore how you’ve captured it.

You have been gifted with the ability to inspire with your imagines. You’ve also been blessed with the spoken word it takes to move mountains. I’m honored to read your thoughts. The people who actually get to hear the compassion in your voice will be forever changed. Of this I have no doubt.

    Merry Christmas, Dalo.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I’ve been around Filipinos for such a long time (in China, HK and Seattle), and they always are the life of the party ~ in the sense that they exude happiness and optimism. Tacloban was much the same, very difficult conditions, but more happiness in these communities than I see anywhere else. Amazing culture, which makes it a struggle at times to see the difficulties. When the sadness does come, it is good to know that there is support ~ and Save the Children is ‘simple & direct’, they are focused to take care of our most precious asset, kids.

Thank you for your very kind and sharing words Audrey ~ and man, these kids have smiles that could light up Christmas trees around the world! They shine 🙂 Take care and enjoy your week.

  13. Minuscule Moments Avatar

Randall it sounds like a wonderful program. Your photo’s of vibrant smiles, hit home. When I look at these beautiful captures my heart bleeds for those lost. Thank you for sharing your gift to make people more aware of the struggles in this world that we rarely think about after the news reports. There is rarely a follow up on this kind of disaster.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Kath ~ there is nothing better than the great warmth and spirit of a great smile, and when it comes from a group who have so little it makes you realize the great goodness we all have in ourselves…and makes you admire them even more. I agree, to be able to review the recovery after a year is an important part of the process to take and share.

  14. Malcolm Greenhill Avatar

Your wonderful pictures of grave markers and devastation mirror the different elements of nature which are always present, although we often refuse to see them until they are thrust upon us. Even on a beautiful day in the country if we would only zoom our perspective we would see the bones of pain that hang beyond the green summer day and that the fields and gardens are places of endless stabbing, impaling, squashing and mangling. The efforts of organizations like Save the Children sometimes seem so insignificant compared to nature’s destructive power but change the perspective and that disproportionate power lends immense dignity to their effort as witnessed by your pictures of smiling children.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

There is something about human nature, that put the focus of life everywhere except on the natural process of destruction/death. I’m an eternal optimist, so am one of those myself, but only by shining the light on difficulties can we begin to shift this ‘disproportionate power’ enough to bring those small, but very significant pieces of happiness. Thanks Malcolm ~ wish you and all a very happy final weeks of this great year! Cheers.

Your stunning photography—these beautiful portraits—poignantly capture the resilience and ability of children to thrive under arduous conditions, especially with a little help from their friends, Save the Children. It fills me with hope and optimism to hear that donated funds have truly made it to the children and they are making a difference (I sometimes wonder if my contributions have really gotten to the people they were intended for). And I agree, the greatest gift we can give to children, to anyone really, and perhaps especially to those we love, is our happiness. Your photography is so inspiring and, as always, I enjoy reading your contemplative and thought-provoking words. Your love for this beautiful planet and for humanity shines bright. Thanks for this! ~ Jeannie

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thanks Jeannie, you are so correct, seeing the donation actually at work is relieving, and Save the Children is known for the majority (90%) of donations making to the end source. Isn’t the resiliency of children (and their ability to find good/happiness) one of the best things in the world?

The smiles and their future successes are where I think we make our largest contributions in life ~ either as parents, teachers, guardians or contributors. 🙂 Wish you well and take care!

Another inspiring post full of amazing images. I remember that day – a Filipino nurse friend was busy on her phone, checking to see if everyone was OK. Luckily she wasn’t from that area but she knew people who were. It’s true, the kids can’t wait and they’re traumatized by an event like this. Great work you did here!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you ~ it is amazing how close the Filipino community is (in HK they have such a close network), and seeing them work to bet Tacloban back on its feet was pretty amazing. Take care ~

  18. seeker Avatar

On behalf of my family and Filipino community thank you for writing about Tacloban. It’s a sobering post. Thank you for being part of Saving the Children, they are the future.

The wrath of Mother Nature is common in the Philippines and I sometimes miss the typhoon and hurricane season. Only Mother Nature can make us stop and think what life is all about and start caring about one another and especially Mother Earth.

I will share this in FaceBook. Blessings. Perpetua.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Beautiful comment, thank you and I have been so impressed by the incredible spirit of Filipinos in Seattle, Hong Kong and of course Tacloban. The incredible happiness and desire for living life fully has always been the most impressive pieces of Filipino culture I’ve admired ~ and it has come together so well in Tacloban within the community and with the NGOs like Save the Children.

You say it so well: only Mother Nature can make us stop and think what life is all about and start caring about one another… What amazed me most about my time there, is that children with so little seem to find more happiness in life than many people who seem to have it all. Wish you the very best as we enter the new year ~ take care!

I agree absolutely, the greatest gift a child can give is a SMILE 🙂

Hi Randall, thank you very much for sharing this post with us. Especially during holiday season, society gets so caught up with Christmas, gifts, feasting, lights, and merry-making that we invariably forget that there are other people who are having a lot worse BUT more resilient than any of us to move on, and to make do with life. Great work to you and your team. Your story and photos are very inspiring to us all.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The spirit of the kids and people of Tacloban really was a great start for the holiday season for me; true happiness is found within, and with great family and friends it is all you really need. Thank you Kat for your great words, and wish you a super Christmas week ~

  21. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Beautiful portraits and beautiful words. Rebuilding must have been very hard on them but they still seem to find things to smile about – if they can rebuild and go about their daily lives with food on the table, then anything is possible to them. But as I was looking at the photos, I couldn’t help but wonder whether the children actually had everything they wanted in the world. Anything else that comes their way is just a bonus. Or maybe the children were happy and smiling because they were happy to see you and your team.

This is one place in the world where the focus is on community as opposed to attaining commodities – every single day. Through all the smiles, the human spirit thrives here.

“the greatest gift a child can give us all is a smile.” Couldn’t agree with you more. Children remind us of the simple pleasures in life 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Mabel, I think you say it best when discussing their outlook in life and ability to smile “…anything is possible to them..” I was so impressed with they way they live their lives ~ yes, it is a big struggle, but they also know the value of enjoying life.

The Filipino community around the world seems to have a pretty good sense of priorities: love & life over material goods. And it shows with their happiness and closeness with each other. Wish you a great week ~

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

“…the value of enjoying life” Now there’s a topic for a deep and meaningful article. Children are generally very carefree , and naive in many ways, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from them. I always find it fascinating how they get excited at the littlest of things. So I bet your visit was probably the highlight of their year.

Bit of a mixed week for me so far, but hopefully exciting times ahead. Hope you are doing well, and have a good year next year 🙂

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

That would be a great topic ~ and children would have all the answers for such an article 🙂 Wish you a great remaining last week of the year, and then ready yourself for the wild ride that will be ’15… Cheers!

That must have been a tremendous experience Randy. I don’t know how the storms in Oregon were, though I can say that the ones in Spain are nothing like some of the frightening ones I went through in Australia or South East Asia, but even so they were nothing in comparison with what you are describing here. It’s amazing how frightening and so so strong mother nature can be. Beautiful pictures (as usual!).
And wishing you a great week and Christmas! xxx

Hi Sofia, yes the storms in SE Asia are amazing…The Oregon Coast storms were awesome, but cannot compare to typhoons. I get pretty excited when typhoons come to Hong Kong ~ a bit naïve. Mother Nature is simply awe-inspiring, a beauty but also dangerous. Thank you very much ~ best to a wonderful ending of ’14 and great beginning of ’15!

    Hello Randall,
Thank you so much for sharing yet another thought-provoking series with us.
Like just about all your other entries, I’ve bookmarked this post, so I can refer to often.
I felt so many emotions while looking at each photo, reading each word.
Living in a country that’s prone to natural disasters, it really hits home when tragedy strikes a huge blow.
Yet, you capture the glory along with the tragedy. I see hope shining in the eyes of the children.
Many thanks also, for sharing the charity information along with Orlando’s photo blog.

    Take care and stay warm!
    Takami

Thank you so much Takami, natural disasters are such a great reminder of what makes us human ~ both endurance and compassion. Through these traits we can experience both the tragedy and glory. Japan experiences just about every type of natural disaster annually, so I think you are well versed ~ continue to be safe! Orlando has a great blog, I enjoy his use of B&W. Wish you well ~

It is such an amazing place, uplifting to see how well they are doing (but still a ways to go…). Thank you!

Gracias 🙂 Random question: What suggestions do you have for a beginner in manual photography? My husband and I were looking into Nikon, the 3000 and 5000 series. Thank you kindly.

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The Nikon 3000 is a great camera to start with, as are the Canon Rebel series cameras…very nice value. And then a great book like Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure… 🙂 Cheers!

Beautiful shining faces you’ve photographed, Randall. These children are survivors in all respects. Thanks for the links to Save the Children.

Thank you Angeline, you are so correct, survivors in all respects.

Such sweet photos of the children! So glad to see them smile after all that the families have gone through over the past year. Must have been a great experience to visit Tacloban, your photos and story are wonderful Randall!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Their smiles were really something ~ not a better way to end the year with. Thank you Elina ~

Randall, this story reached inside of me and I felt it ever so deeply. What you have portrayed here moves the Soul to tears. Thank you for the links to Save The Children. I also would like to share with you recently our area experienced a horrific snow storm in which we received over 7 feet of snow in 3 days. I understand what it is like to not know if you are going to live or die. NOT to the extent of these people by far, but I did get a taste of what that fear is like. When Mother Nature rages it makes one realize how very small that person is in comparison. And how helpless we really are. Bless you for the work you do. Everytime I am here at your blog, my Heart is moved tremendously as it is now. These precious people are a shining example to all of us how to rebuild and to move forward after such a terrifying horror. Love, Amy

Thank you Amy ~ and wish you the best this holiday. It is something else to be humbled by Mother Nature, realize that life truly is to be enjoyed. Wish you well and take care ~

One of your most important posts, R.

“Chasing the idea of becoming one with the storm.” I was going to say ah, a man who courts danger. But then was blown away (pun intended) by the rest of the post. It is unthinkable what these families and the children faced, perished in, and survived. I love the quote on inspiration, am awed and humbled to see that you rolled up your sleeves and DID SOMETHING to help transform hope into reality – what I for the most part only write about. I know you’ll argue it was the other way around, but the kids were so blessed for your kindness and mindful service. Thank you for raising awareness and expanding our perspectives on suffering and blessings.

Wonderful comment yet again, D. It was a strange feeling how I do enjoy storms (and in HK especially typhoons)…and as we were leaving Tacloban, typhoon Ruby was a day away and I felt guilty wanting to stay and experience it.

The people on the ground around the world for NGOs are pretty amazing folks, incredible minds and great commitments…humbling watching them work. They make you proud to be part of the human race 🙂 Take care ~

Those smiles of the children is a testament that restoration and rehabilitation, though a slow process, is happening. Through Save the Children and your portraits my heart sings with joy and gratitude. I can’t help still but be overwhelmed when watching documentaries on what happened with my fellow Filipinos over there. Seeing this is different. This post of yours touched my heart on a lighter side. I share my smile painted on my face all the while as I scroll down to see the rest of your post. This is great. This is happiness.

    Thank you,
    Farrell

Thanks Farrell, you say it very well ~ a slow process, but it is happening and having a great impact. I really admired the sense of community and happiness, even with such destruction there is still this great sense of life.

it was already year ago and still still this province is trying to stand again amidst the fact that another storm has come their way

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

They have made many improvements, but you are right, they are still trying to stand again. Typhoon Ruby arrived a couple days later, and fortunately impact was minimal ~ such a tough situation, but strong people.
