Unfinished Business in the Year of the Tiger

A Peruvian sky painted with strokes of magic only a thunderstorm can create plays out in front of me. My exhaustion complete, I sink deeper into the grass and dirt and drift away from life, away from the world, away from reality.

Silence envelops the valley around me, and the storm’s energy is waking my soul. I stare into the eyes of the Year of the Tiger. Is it time to surrender or attack?

A broken spirit is the debt to be paid for a year well-lived.  The reward? To stand at the precipice of a new year and do it all over again.

Life is brilliant in this way.

Reflecting on the turmoil of the past year, my exhale is more than a sigh. Battle scars feel fresh as yesterday and make this annual walk across the razor’s edge, the balance between decadence and restoration, even more difficult.

Respect the responsibility of the past year and accept the penance of another expedition.  Ignore the aches and move on.

Around me are whispers, words I do not understand. The beauty around me invites me to stay, but I’m unable to grasp a hold of this place – unable to settle down. The simple wish for solace does not reconcile with my actions… so I continue to leave unfinished business behind.

Blurred faces in the crowd, their crisp eyes speak freely. Lives I wish to experience, minds bearing the weight of the world. Things unsaid pushing us forward.

Finish it. Take the beating. Absorb the blows and with greater devotion continue the pursuit. Is there a better feeling than to shake off the pain and find the strength to stand again?

To be unafraid. The heart of youth backed by a soul of aged wisdom. I can barely remember such a time.

The brashness, insolence of an unharnessed spirit, one found in the true men and women of history: a blend of courage and kindness.  I wonder, is one much different than the other?

Naked in the shadows I sit in defiance on the brink of the new year. The morning leaves me empty. I’m not looking to change the world, but to just get by. A cup of coffee. Eight hours of drudgery. A cold beer, a queen of the night, and decompression in front of a television. And it goes on, ad nauseam.

Is this not finding solace within the chaos of life?

The spell of a sunrise over an enchanted land has me lost, a fleeting sense of wonderment of where it’ll take me before it is broken by the comfort of my barstool ~ a place to sit uninterrupted and rail against life iniquities secretly wishing for something, anything, to fall into my lap. Chasing dreams is too exhausting. So I wait.

Waiting… the ode of a has-been.

When the next great thing fails to appear, I’ll lower expectations.  Another beer, perhaps? Another smoke, why not? A handout, a little hard stuff to make life a bit easier to deal with? Yes, yes, and yes. Eventually, the wait for the end will arrive.

Ah, my laughter feels good, the remnants of a defiant mind.

A glance at the scene outside, it’s all unfamiliar. The refusal to be swallowed up by the mindless cycle of blandness by veering into the unknown is my escape pod. A chance to bend the rules again and my schism is complete ~ off my barstool ready to push the envelope once again.

This rollercoaster of competing desires: the life of a has-been versus the life of a pioneer…

Follow the rules to enjoy the privilege of living in an orderly world, and bend the rules to stretch the spirit and evolve. There are no absolutes; there are no easy answers.

I spin off in another direction, leaving my cold coffee behind along with my feeling of hesitation… Did chasing false hope allow the spirit of the pioneer to drift away?

The twinge of electricity says ‘nah.’ Behind the façade of the loafer is an eagerness to learn, it’s the spice of recklessness ~ the unfinished business we all share. Action is inevitable.

Words of the Stoic philosopher Seneca reverberate throughout the valley of the Andes: you want to live, not just exist. Resist the squandering of life and instead earn it.

Everything of value should be earned. Effort and devotion are how one earns value. Earns respect. Earns trust. Earns the right to dream with the valuable lesson that what one works for should never be frittered away.

Break from expectations, bend a rule or two, attack the Year of the Tiger, and roll with the punches as they come.

The unanticipated. The unexpected.

It causes the heart to beat a bit quicker, hair to stand on end, and eyes to focus upon an upcoming epiphany.

We are creatures of habit. Of the many things we do, we do because it’s a foregone conclusion. Within us, however, is a surprise.  An innate and beautiful desire to pick a moment where we do the one thing no one expected at all.

Unfinished business.  Finish it.

A life of the expected, rich in comfort, easily hides its restrictive chains. Conversely, a microsecond of the unexpected, rich in wisdom, flaunts the desire for freedom.

Two sides of the same coin. Struggle is necessary for comfort to exist; without strength, we’d never know weakness, and without the blandness of life, an unexpected shift could not move the soul.

And with this thought, the has-been in me smiles, pops open a beer, and pays a compliment to the pioneer.

I move across the abyss into a new realm ~ the words of St. Vincent leading the way, “Living in fear in the Year of the Tiger”   🎶

“The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of strength, exorcising evils, and braveness.” I hope that will prove to be true for our world.
Your post contains beautiful images and writing, as always!

Wow Randall. You’re starting the year off with a roar! Thank you for the beautiful images, and poignant commentary on our modern lives and the challenge to be free in a world that rewards our servitude. May the spirit of tiger give us the energy to resist the dullness of safety and routine.

There is always a great feeling of optimism entering into a new year, and with the Tiger I think it is good to be a bit more on the offensive than waiting for things to come around 🙂 There is so much to enjoy out there, and as much as I will continue to latch onto my earned comfort ~ this could be the year we get to break free with a bit more travel and freedom which always makes things a bit more interesting. Thank you, Brad, for the words and wishing you well and looking forward to hearing how the Tiger will treat you this year. Cheers my friend!

There were so many lines that resonated with me in your thought-provoking photo essay. I think the Year of the Tiger is going to be a year of now what?

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha, yes Liz, I think you are right – and this is also kind of a neat challenge to have ahead of us: now what? We are well practice in creating the best scenario these days so as things open up a bit more (perhaps more hopeful that I should be) we can see what we can do with the year. Wishing you well and that this year of the Tiger will treat us all well. Thank you and take care ~

You’re welcome. I’ve set myself a definite goal for the “what now” year. The year of the Tiger will be the year of the first draft for me.

“You want to live, not just exist.” and “Are we has-beens or pioneers?” Hits home in these isolating times, Randall. Your provocative images are perfect companions to your compelling thoughts in the new year. A toast to you, Pioneer.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It has been a unique couple of years+ where a lot of adjustments have been made – and hopefully this brave new world we are now in will provide new opportunities to live and seek out whatever is out there to our tasting 🙂 One thing that has been nice, is understanding that dipping a toe in the has-been life is not too bad so fluctuating between this pool and that of a pioneer may be a nice recipe moving forward 🙂 Cheers to you, Jane, and wishing you a wonderful week and Tiger year ahead.

They seem like now, and seeing the date of the photographs I see why. I know both (I think there are a couple of photos from Arequipa too) Finishing cycles so we can start others already in our minds, I know the feeling. Thank you, Randall; still things are not that back to normal, so these images are somehow a museum of what it was, but some movie with dinosaurs would claim that life finds its way and surely these new routines will be replaced by real life, again.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Hello Francis, so great to hear from you and yes, you are correct a couple of the photos are from Arequipa 🙂 I miss Peru, and while home with my parents we were talking about how great it will be to return ~ the sites, the people, and also very important the food! Peruvian cuisine was the greatest surprise. It is interesting to hear your views of the photos of 2019 are now somewhat dated with all that has happened the past couple of years. Have the elections change the mood much? It is kind of nice to begin to dream of a return ~ hopefully the Year of the Tiger will treat us well and the dreams of us all start turning into reality. Cheers to you, and wishing you great health and happiness this year. Take care ~

      1. Francis.R. Avatar

Hello, Randall. he he, I heard about the “Peruvian tummy” which is how visitors return to their countries after trying the variety of the regional cuisines. In these elections people voted for the candidate that seemed to have not been bribed beforehand by large national and international corporations, and NGO’s. Personally I believe the new president is not that capable of management but at least he will do what voters asked to do, and not the “investors.” The only detail is that the media owned by those corporations are issuing a mediatic campaign against him (they accuse him of far right and far left, if the cloud casts a shadow on them the president is to blame) but fortunately in Peru we already know that neither media nor corporations are trustworthy, there are videos and everything. Most people don’t care much about politics here except when looking for work through a godfather in a party, but also is true that people that is in internet is adopting whatever is in fashion in the U.S., reading tweets one would think that Peru is polarized between Democrats and Republicans xD The Chinese zodiac is a mystery to me, and so it is the European, despite knowing its origin through a Babylonian myth, in part because I think here our stars are different. But in any case I hope it will be a better year. Thanks for your courtesy towards me, Randall.

    Dear Randall,
    thanks for this interesting text.
Why not enjoying the comforts of our world? Isn’t it the split of Western people that they always think they are not allowed to enjoy what is offered to them. This complaining seems to me to be typical. Reading your text we asked ourselves what is meant by ‘living’?
    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Thank you, Klausbernd, and absolutely agree that it is a privilege to appreciate and enjoy the comforts we have created… the comforts we have earned. In many ways, the past couple of years has made me appreciate this so much more, and I am grateful. Part of me misses the struggle of being young and striving to reach a level of comfort and this is a normal part of growing up/aging – and the reminiscing of those great times is one of the wonders of living and keeping our minds and heart young. This is the one thing I admire about you, the Fab Four, is doing just this 🙂 Wishing you a great year ahead – hopefully some day our paths will cross and we can share our ideas over a pint or two! Your memories of Peru forty years ago would be something I’d give anything to have 🙂 What a place it must have been ~ especially your travels to Machu Picchu, could you post on this for us?!? It would be great to see and read ~ and yes, this should be a year to live large and full… I’m full of optimism. Cheers, Eliza, and take care ~

Thank you, Randall. I only took a cheap camera with me and the prints are pretty grainy and faded by now. I admit I haven’t looked at them in years. Maybe I should pull them out and reminisce. 😉
One thing I do see from your shots is the expansion of settlements that fill out whole valleys where there once were little or none. (The population has doubled from 17 mil. in 1979 to 33 mil. currently -wow). Tourism has brought much needed money and industry has grown as well (sadly they had a recent oil spill from tsunami damage).
I also see that Cuzco has transformed into a bustling hub from the sleepy town it was. And I am staggered by the expansion of Machu Picchu, only a few buildings were excavated back then. Even though it was not allowed, we slept up the trail a bit after hiking down that day, coming in at dusk. (I saw a post from a couple who visited in 2019 with all the changes.)
Aguas Calientes was just a few low wooden buildings with limited accommodations. Now, wow!
I’m sure I’d be overwhelmed seeing it today! Take care, thanks again.

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It really would be something to see Peru at the time you did ~ there is no doubt these areas (Cusco, Aguas Calientes especially) will continue to grow and develop… would be great to see the contrast of these places over the past 30 years. And better yet, 30 years from now visiting to see it again 🙂

I love your posts Randall. Your contemplation, creativity and questions create pause in our life. When we don’t have time for this, we suffer and battle with the minds constant need for certainty and familiarity. ‘Is it time to surrender or attack?’
To know this deeply, I listen in silence to the wisdom of my heart. And like you, I sense the Peruvian people understood this long before any of us did. 🙏🏻

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you so much, Karen ~ your words truly mean a lot and it is great to be able to connect with you with this post. It is always this constant pull between the familiar / certainty and then what lies beyond that gets me and others thinking about what else this world holds for us. A great little quest we are on to figure things out as we move forward, at times with difficulty but always find a spark around the corner. Always worth moving forward if only to see just what is ahead 🙂 Wishing you the best in the year of the Tiger ~ take care.

Hmmm…..a bit more introspective than even your normal self Randall. Of course beautifully written and illustrated but I find myself wondering about your intentions as we move into the Year of the Tiger. Contemplating what, when, how and why? Perhaps simply a reflection on new year, new beginnings? Somehow you always leave us deep in thought – but this time perhaps it is the author who also questions….. Whatever the case, always love to see your name appear in my reader and as ever you do not disappoint my always-high expectations.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Always wonderful to read you, Tina. Definitely endless loops of contemplation, from my vagabond existent vs how I had always imagined myself settled down by now… And overall wonder whether introspectively, we’d all be amazed at the things we’ve done – and haven’t done – and confused at what life is all about. Your comments on this post makes me reflect on my words much more than normal 🙂 Life seems built upon on a law of contradictions, conflicting desires that move us through periods of our life, and it’s a win – win scenario because of reflection and great people/great connections all around us.

The past month I’ve talked with a few much younger friends (in their 20’s) who are making some awesome decisions in their lives, taking risks in their lives unimaginable to me now but knowing to be at that age again when taking risks is vital to growth, is so special. The importance of dreaming, working, accepting the risks, the struggle, and then those great moments of achievement… I look back at this magical time in life, and I miss it.

These days, I have enough achievements, so less of a need to struggle which leads to less of a need to dream, and logically, fewer achievements. Tongue in check, but I’m becoming a has-been 🙂 A bit simplified, but this natural shift in lifestyle addresses the questions you asked: what, when, how, why? And the excitement of having to figure out life all over again. I want to do it all, experience it all, so much unfinished business 🙂 My defiant mind will always dream and search for challenges, and this new stage in life provides plenty to roll over during the Year of the Tiger. I do think life has spoiled me because I can only see good ahead 🙂 Thank you so much, Tina, and apologize for the length of this reply – hmmmmm, could stretch these thoughts out into a separate post! Cheers to the Year of the Tiger: 虎虎生成!

Well I’m happy to have caused you come further thought Randall, better yet if I inspired another post😊. Yes I’m with you re the phases of life. Hello Randall,
A Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
“…you want to live, not just exist. Resist the squandering of life and instead earn it.” – ah, this really hits a nerve (or two). In Japanese we have an expression 自問自答 while my English level can’t translate it adequately, I am sure you can understand the nuance from the kanji. Your post seems to resonate with many of your readers on various levels and it is the same with me too. This past year has been another tumultuous one, and the start of the Tiger year already has me asking/answering my own questions/intentions on a number of levels. But your images and the spirit of the people you capture through your lens encourage me to keep my chin up and finish unfinished business.
As always, best wishes from my husband to you and your family.
    Your friend in Japan,
    Takami

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Hello Takami ~ what an incredibly wonderful and thoughtful reply, thank you. Yes, the kanji and Chinese hanzi are similar, and it is the power of introspection we have over ourselves that can really set the tone for our day, for our life. This post is exactly about asking this very question to myself and of course getting a “blizzard” of different thoughts and ideas, but settling with the one that is simply find, hold, and enjoy those wonderful moments we create in our lives. There is much out there, which leaves us all a lot of unfinished business.
Very happy to read your thoughts and your words this evening, and wishing you and your family the absolute best in the Year of the Tiger. Take care my friend, and look forward to the day our paths will cross.

Last year was the Year of the Ox, and as oxen go they’re often described as steady and strong, which very much described what last year had been for many people as they had to persevere against all odds. The Year of the Tiger hopefully brings more energy to us, more ferocity to shape our own lives. “Struggle is necessary for comfort to exist, without strength we’d never know weakness, and without the blandness of life an unexpected shift could not move the soul.” The pandemic has been our common struggle, and I hope we’re beginning to see comfort at the end of the tunnel, despite the recent wave caused by Omicron.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Hello Bama, loved this review of the Year of the Ox versus Tiger, it was the same feeling I had when thinking of the new Lunar New Year – a contrast in style which also matches up with our reality. It seems we are undergoing a shift in outlook of the future and taking a bit more of an aggressive stance to what may be possible in this new year. Weighing both sides of the extremes, common struggles (politically or personally), and putting our best foot forward. Thank you very much for the insightful comment, and look forward to hearing how you’ll move through the year. Cheers and wish you health and happiness.

  23. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Beautifully written as always, and also beautifully shot as usual, Randall. Every sentence you wrote is intentional and carries gravity of meanings. Very fitting thoughts for the times we are in. There is so much fear around these days, fear of what’s to come, fear of other around us, fear of where we will be as a collective in the next few years. Anything could come our way, could be something extreme, or some smaller events that make us see our lives in a completely different way.

It’s the Year of the Tiger, another year with a whole different energy. Like you, it’s good time to contemplate what has been and where we are at. Agree that life is about two sides of the coin, just like there are ups and downs, cycles and seasons in life – and each year and life itself is marked by seasons be it four seasons of tropical seasons.

Wishing you a wonderful year ahead, Randall. May you continue to journey on, see more sights and have a good time with both your photography and art. Stay safe 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

You say it well, Mabel, this is a year with a whole different energy ~ a good time for us to reassess and if necessary adjust. The one thing I believe we’ve learned over and over is anything can come in and bump us off course, and this can be a good thing because there will be a slightly different set of opportunities for us to explore. I love the way you say “every sentence you wrote is intentional and carries a gravity of meaning” it is the exact way I have described David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd fame) and the way he plays guitar – not a wasted note and comes off so clean. So your compliment is quite special for me. The year ahead seems to have a definite spark of optimism and wish it holds true for us and everyone ~ a year of creativity and seeing the world through a new lens… maybe I’ll invest in some new camera equipment 🙂 Wish you a wonderful day and most importantly a great Year of the Tiger: 恭喜发财,虎虎生威! Take care ~

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

It sounds like you have your inspirations like David Gilmour and more, and they have inspired your work in such a good way. So good you choose to share your work freely with us and we get to see a better side of the human spirit. And have a bit more optimism. Maybe you deserve a treat with a new camera…maybe a new Canon. I’m a bit biased as Canon always served me well. But in the end, go with what speaks to you, like you’ve probably done a lot of 😊

Ah, how tiring chasing dreams can be. And how tempting it is to walk away from unfinished business. I love the way you describe the duality and contradictions of life, Randall. May the Year of the Tiger gift you with the strength and bravery to chase dreams and finished what is unfinished. Blessings to you as you cross this chism of life.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Yes indeed, Jolandi, you’ve walked and conquered this path of chasing dreams and effort of finishing with your incredible move to becoming the queen of an olive empire in central Portugal 🙂 an inspiration to us all! The contradictions of life have always been a bit fascinating, I remember reading the Dao de Jing more than a decade ago and it was there where I thought a lot about how small differences can expand into great extremes if we let it… and what better example of this than world politics. Wishing you and your family continued strength and courage on your journey of chasing dreams and enjoy the wonders in the Year of the Tiger.

      1. Jolandi Steven Avatar

I love the “queen” part, Randall. 😆🥰 I can work with that in my imagination. Thank you for your lovely Year of the Tiger wishes. The Do de Jing embodies so much wisdom that is as relevant now than before. Like you say, the small things can have an immense impact. May this day be a blessed one.

The trip of these photos was 2019, but part of my imagination is still residing there, an amazing place. Look forward to hearing and seeing your travels to this magical place ~ maybe I’ll be there at the time 🙂 Cheers to you and your family in this coming year, take care!

Such beautiful images. And I do understand your meaning – that pull of the new, for adventure, to go at life full-throttle regardless of the consequences, vs the pull for comfort and security. I wonder if any of us ever find a balance for more than short periods, or stuff our feelings into submission.
A lovely reflection Randall, that has me wanting to break free.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Absolutely, Alison, thank you and you nail it with the idea for us to go full throttle into whatever adventure lies ahead ~ consequences be damned 🙂 There is always a pull for us towards comfort and relaxation, which I think grows stronger over time, so finding the balance between the two is the best way to remain engaged in this continually evolving life we live. Wishing you nothing but wonder and happiness in this new year ~ cheers to one with great health and excitement. Take care ~

Beautiful pictures. Worrisome text. Hmmm. So opposite your last post with family at home…
Are you all right? (“Ahmona” have to read the comments. I normally don’t, feeling like I’m intruding in other people’s conversations…)
There is one picture I might try my hand as sketching… Will let you know.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

😂 Yeah, I was a little bit all over with this post ~ could’ve use another thousand words or so to clarifying things a bit more ~ but I was already pushing the length of the post so kept it as raw as possible 🙂 Would love to hear about the photo you’re thinking about sketching, you always are able to see more into a photo/scene than most people (an rare insight of an eye of the artist) so that would be very cool…

      1. equinoxio21 Avatar

I finally got the message. And I concur.
The photo? Not sure I will sketch it. Though I’m tempted. The young woman/girl with the llamas? I’m trying to improve my “portraits”, people expressions? And that one has a composition that is challenging. Hopefully my hand can capture it.
Still In Czech Dalo? What is the feeling there about Ukraine? The Czechs surely remember the Russian tanks, right?

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I was wondering which photo would have interested you, and my guess was the photo of the young woman with the llamas ~ a portrait with an interesting expression ~ a challenge but as you say it is always good to stretch the envelope. I’m in Seattle right now, but head back to Czech in a couple of weeks. We have quite a few Ukrainians working in the factory, and they are awesome so the feeling in Czech and the village I live in are pretty one-sided as you guessed so well:-)

      3. equinoxio21 Avatar

        Dobri den.
Enjoy Seattle. Czech is a bit too close to Russia for comfort. Though I do remember in the 80’s, living in France we were all too conscious that the Russian tanks were barely 500 Kms away. From the East German border… (Not to mention that I spent the first half of the 80’s in the Defence industry… Veeeery much aware of the short distance…)
I can’t say that I hope sense will prevail… There is no sense in war. But let’s say the West shows enough fortitude to make Putin step back…
And you guessed right. That photo will be interesting to sketch.
        Cheers

  40. equinoxio21 Avatar

Okay. After reading some of the comments and your replies, I feel reassured. A nice twist in your words. And an interesting perspective. I would definitely agree with Liz (Gaufreau) that this will (might?) be a year of “now what”? Or did she say “what now”? 😉 Independently from the fact that some of us are suffering from “country fever” (a term coined by Nilla, another great blogger from Down Under), I still believe that Covid could open a world of possibilities, around Home office in particular. With impact on housing, commuting, even “carbon print”. And that is just scratching the surface.
Happy New Year of the Tiger my friend. 🐯

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I think the focus on my writing was a true dichotic scene, where I was hearing different/contrasting thoughts that both sides of the extremes of life were bantering about and it was fun to contemplate both. I think we often live life this way between the contented, sedate state of both mind and effort versus the contrasting one of actively dreaming and doing ~ both are comforting but in a completely different manner 🙂 The covid and post-covid world has definitely changed the way I view life and in a very great sense it has given me much greater balance in terms of happiness and possibilities. The beautiful silver lining to be found under any circumstance. Cheers to you, Brian, and wishing you a very healthy and happy Year of the Tiger! Cheers my friend!

      1. equinoxio21 Avatar

Not sure that many people look at both sides of the coin. Most are content with the “sedate” life. Compliments for looking at both Yin and Yang. 😉
Gong he fat choi… (A friend from HK taught me that. )”Means” Happy New year, though the true meaning is probably “many thousand years of prosperity”
        Cheers indeed.

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Good way to put it “Yin and Yang” ~ fits perfectly. And yes, my many years in HK during Chinese New Year, the sound of “Gong Hei Fat Choi” was always a great greeting to hear as the holiday put everyone is such great spirits and a great mood. 恭喜发次!

      3. equinoxio21 Avatar

HK now? How’s the move from HK to Czech? You must be in the Finance world I guess.
And the ideograms? Did you pick up Cantonese? (Green with envy. The little I stayed in Penang I picked up a bit of Hokkien…)
They say “Gong Xi Fa Cai” Quite close right?

Hello J.J., thank you very much for the comment and great to know that Peru has grabbed a piece of you as well. I hope the Year of the Tiger has been treating you well, the continued global turmoil we’ve all been experiencing has been ratcheted up even more this year, but it can make us all strong ~ more inspired to make the world and our world a better place. I think more than ever, it is important for us to ‘follow the rules to enjoy the privilege of living in an orderly world, and bend the rules to stretch the spirit and evolve…’ it is the surest way we can evolve as humans. The Year of the Tiger has been good so far, Randall. I just returned from Benaras. Do check out my post when you have the time. I did think that you would have been able to capture the most amazing photographs had you visited the place. It is a photographer’s delight.
Yes, we must ‘follow the rules’ and enjoy the benefits of a society dictated by law and order. I saw it during my recent visit to Benaras. I believe so much has changed there because of one man. It goes to show how important it is to have a good leader.
You write wonderfully well and the pleasure of making the acquaintance is mine. Wishing you a wonderful spring too. Here, in India, it is extremely warm and we’re waiting for the rains.

Great pictures as usual, it reminds me of my trip to South America way back in 1974, have good memories, of it even if it ended in trouble, nothing too serious, someone stole my passport, and meanwhile it was replaced it took almost a month, by that time my money has ruined out, and had to go back home penniless hitchhiking, fortunately good people helped me along the way, slowly but got home safe. 😊

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

How I would have loved to have seen and experience South America back in ’74 ~ all that was happening at the time and truly a pureness of the country to see and experience. Often, when I am in a new place I imagine what it was like in the past (near and long ago)… to have those experiences is something to treasure and memories to inspire. While being penniless and hitchhiking back home sounds like a very perilous ordeal, it also has the sense of adventure which is pretty dang cool 🙂 Cheers, and wish you a great spring ahead.

Randall, I’ve been largely absent from the blogosphere this last year or so. However, what a treat it is to return now and again find your incredible images and eloquent words. They are an elegant pair.

The Seneca quote, as well as this section of your post really spoke to me:

“A glance at the scene outside, it’s all unfamiliar. The refusal to be swallowed up by the mindless cycle of blandness by veering into the unknown is my escape pod.”

Though Shawn and I have had some special travels these last 2 years (most were born out of necessity, ie traveling to get our vaccines) we’ve largely been living among the familiar. I do miss the thrill of waking up in an unknown city. Hopefully there will be more of that in 2022. (Peru perhaps?)

May your Year of the Tiger be full of adventure!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I think you and I have had similar absences from the blogosphere the past couple of years, Tricia 🙂 ~ but when I do get access and have a creative flow to it is always nice to return and see friends again, so thank you very much for your wonderful words, they mean a lot. I think you and Shawn are the epitome of veering into the unknown and finding those jewels of adventure that are out there waiting to be discovered.

The past couple of years have been very strange, but in a way I’ve enjoyed being able to spend time in one place (home) and to take advantage of this added time with family and friends. There is more hope of restrictions easing and travel becoming once again becoming more accessible and comfortable, and like you say getting back to the thrill of waking up in an unknown city. Here’s to a great springtime and year ahead for you and Shawn. Thank you again ~

I did not realize until just looking that 2022 is the Year of the Black Water Tiger. The last Water Tiger year was 1962. Other Tiger Year elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal . Taking from the web: “Water Tiger — a kind, fully developed, with a sharp mind and logical thinking, loves everything new, unknown.

That kind of fits doesn’t it? Reveling in the unanticipated and unexpected?

Always wonderful flow of words and thoughts and moody, moving images!! Thanks for those.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It is great to see this analysis of the Year of the Black Water Tiger ~ and even more the expectation of the Water Tiger … loves everything new, unknown.” A perfect description of what lies in the year ahead. Thank you very much, Judy, for this fascinating insight on Chinese astrology ~ during my time in China, it was always an important event to meet up with a expert and have them analyze the year for me… my friends loved doing it for me and I, of course, reveled in hearing it 🙂 Thank you very much for the memories past and present. Take care and wishing you a great Year of the Tiger and for the springtime up ahead.

Thank you very much, Hedy. Yes, I too think that the past few years has us all itching for some positive change and adventure – and unlike the past, with all that is going on there will be a greater rush of emotions as we ‘open up’ to the world again. It seems the spirit of cooperation and unity will heighten the experiences we will have once we can dive back in again. Always love reading your reflections, so thanks again and here’s to a great spring ahead.
