Slowing Down the Perception of Time

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-2

I’ve made a mistake.

I look behind me, but there is no turning back. I’ve passed the point of no return.

The chill of frost has seeped further into my bones; the other side of the frozen lake appears just as far away as it did an hour ago. Or was it only a few minutes ago?

With snow blowing around, I bow my head and take a seat, lost in time.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-1

Earlier today, I met up with a friend, a theoretical physicist who has one of the best minds I’ve ever known. Her head is often in the clouds, and her optimism makes her irresistible in conversation.

The day started as it often does, walking along a path with coffee in hand amid a group of monkeys. Today, she brought up the infinite monkey theorem: given an infinite amount of time, a monkey at a typewriter would almost surely produce a piece of work such as the complete writings of Shakespeare.

Given the group’s low energy level, we agreed that our friends wouldn’t be delivering any masterpiece today.

However, this did get us talking about time and the few fleeting hours remaining in 2015 before the New Year arrived. As if on cue, we both said, “Time has flown by faster this year than ever before…” and with this, our discussion of time began.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-8

A topic very dear to her heart is the question of how our brain sees the world ~ how our brain organizes what we experience, sorts through the chaos, and creates a perception of reality so we can function effectively in this world.

Her enthusiasm is contagious.  I remember the first time she looked over her coffee and breathlessly whispered, “The only reality we know is what our brain manufactures…how we experience and feel time – it all happens within the mind,” followed by her smile and a mad-scientist laugh.

Mother & Child

“When I was a young kid, summer days seemed to go on forever. Every second of the day had something new to explore, my mind racing to understand and learn. Time did not matter.” She sat back and mused, her eyes on a baby monkey being cared for by her mother.

“A young child has no understanding of time; they live in the moment…being time as there is so much happening in their world, their brain is in the now, doing all it can to make sense of life.”

She is lost in thought but adds, “The adult interpretation of time is irrelevant to a child.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-13

I’ve always been fascinated by time, from the view of a physicist and the existence of time to the neuroscientist and our perception of time.

One early memory I have is of being a young kid floating in a pool of water, lost in thought about time. Thinking about why adults always say, “time goes by faster and faster as they get older…” I had no idea what this meant.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-18
Whooper Swans Lake Mashuko - Perception of Time-3

As I grew older, I started to feel like time was speeding up, but it wasn’t until recently that I began to take it seriously, sensing time passing at an increasingly rapid rate. It is alarming.

The honking of the geese above signals the alarm as well, time speeding away out of reach. The bite of the cold wind sends shivers down my spine. Strangely, it is a feeling I am relishing – this rush of a new experience.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-6

“This is the frustrating thing about life,” she nods at me, eyes sparkling again, “when we were young, our minds were spinning. Our brain receives so much information, often out of order, that it needs time to process and reorganize all the new ideas so we can understand the reality we are living in.”

She pauses wistfully, “Our brains needed time to sort and organize reality, so our perception of time was longer when we were young. We extended time. This may be the key to extending life today.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-9

“Fast forward to us as adults, and the world is familiar.  Information can be processed quickly,” and with a sigh, she takes another sip of coffee. “Thus, our perception of time is shorter. Time flies by.”

“Add to this our repetitive routines, modern technology efficiently processing information, and time begins to pass quicker every year.  We continue to provide the fuel by getting in a rut, spiraling quickly downward with time.”

Her gaze landed on the far side of the lake, and she added, “Days quickly turn into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years until one day *poof* we look back and it is over.”

She paused, and I was surprised to see tears well up in her eyes. “I feel as if time has tricked me and I am spinning out of control.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-5

Her tears slowly rolled down her cheek, each representing a dream disappearing into the annals of time.

She wiped the tears away and exclaimed, “It is sad, we get older and our brain becomes efficient because we are boring!” She laughed. “Without adventure, life will fly right on by.”

Her eyes lock in on mine, and I am surprised how a discussion of physics can increase my heart rate and make my palms sweaty. “We need to find a way to extend our time…”

“We need to explore new sensations, overload the brain, and perhaps then we can stretch out time just like we did when we were young,” the glimmer in her eyes not seeking approval.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-15

We walked a few more steps before her words hit me like a wave of cold water.

She whispered, “Let’s be spontaneous.” Pointing across the lake, she added, “Your adventure begins with a trek across the lake. I’ll wait for you at the hot springs on the other side…and together we’ll try to stop time, at least for tonight.”

Stunned by her words, my mind went blank, and I looked toward a monkey for help. Fortunately, he was a wise one and seemed to understand my situation.  He nodded, so I looked at her and did the same.

With a quick peck on my cheek, she grabbed her keys and headed out to the car, leaving me stranded.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-14

This is how I find myself in this predicament, lost on Lake Mashu-ko. I look ahead where I believe the hot springs lie and sigh…it seems I’ve been out here forever, and the other side is still so far away.

Time, a concept impossible to define, but definitely worth contemplating as 2015 comes to an end.  My goal for the New Year is to slow down time.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-10

I look at my watch and realize I’ve been out here for only 10 minutes.  Yes, this is a good sign, and my laughter echoes off the surrounding mountains.

With my heart beating and my brain working overtime, I pick up the pace.  I figure that whether or not she is there waiting for me doesn’t really matter.  The adventure has begun.  From across the lake, a cry from a white-tailed sea eagle reminds me of the words of Eleanor Roosevelt:

The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

I look ahead, and no one has to tell me, life is short, getting shorter.  Make time in 2016 to explore.  To slow down and take in all life has to offer.

Oh wow, Randall. This post is another representation of a masterpiece. How true what you have written here regarding time. When I am with my camera, when I am with Mother Nature and nothing but mother nature, there seems to be no time. I am actually shocked when I look at the time realizing hours have flown by well all I had known was the magic of the moment. How I wish I could slow down time. My days run long 16 – 18 hours a day. 04 the simplicity of being a child again, how my heart does long. There is so much to Comment on your post that I could go on forever. Just know I was very moved. And I really thank you. LOVE, Amy ❤

Nothing quite like becoming so involved in something that time no longer matters ~ I hope to do a lot of this in the new year. A timeless year I suppose is my goal, and getting out in nature a great part of this plan. Thank you very much Amy for the kind words and wish you continued success this year ~ looking forward to see what it can bring. Cheers.

I have no idea how long I’ve been with this post, Randall. But I enjoyed every minute of it. The deep philosophical ponderings on a familiar subject, and the well matched, gorgeous images. Time really slowed down. Now I just need to keep it that way. May 2016 keep your brain busy with endless discoveries!

What a great, timeless comment Tiny, nothing quite like being able to create something that can transport a mind to another place or time 🙂 Hopefully the new year will have many more endless discoveries, it is a good plan to have for the year. Oh, to slow down time! Good luck with your quest in 2016, Randall. May it be a good year for adventure. So by the way, I think you are doing an excellent job in freezing time with your photographs.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Wouldn’t that be the perfect way to start off the New Year, nice and slow ~ so at some point in the year time starts screaming at you to slow down? A perfect world that would be… Exploring and adventures continue to be the plan, and I think the same is with you – thank you and wish you a great 2016 Jolandi.

Great photographs. I think you may have one or two of my relatives in with the bathers there. I think time for me, as for most people, has seemed to speed up as I’ve aged. Any time I want to experience it slowing to a crawl again, I just ask my children to tidy their room.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thanks Bun. Comments from my family and friends have suggested that these photos are the best I’ve ever looked…with the last photo matching me perfectly. As for time, the best comment I ever received came from a friend who took my then-wife shopping: “If you only have a few hours to live, go shopping with your wife…it will feel like forever.” Gotta like the comedians in life ~ Cheers to a great year ahead.

Good advice as we leave the banks of 2015 and enter into the mysterious waters of 2016. This is probably the one time of year that we are all conscious of the passage of time, whether the year has flown or crawled along, either way its a demarcation. Other than our birthdays perhaps.

Your point on the perception of speed as relates to the passage of time is perfectly true. I too can remember my elders saying that the older you get the faster time goes. Maybe its because when you are older there is so much you want to do or HAVE to do and there is never enough time for it all. Maybe you’ve discovered that time is something when spent cannot be replenished and so there is this race to fill it better? I don’t think kids think that time is unlimited in a conscious way, just that they are too busy becoming who they are and haven’t reached that point where a future has to be envisioned. Just no experience. Space perception is kind of disproportionate too when young. Visiting a place where you used to live and thought the house was huge, as an adult you are surprised at how modest it really was. Oh, I can remember as a kid I was so screwed up on time perception that I thought the summer and the school year were the same length. Both seemed like a long time to me and I was always ready for the new school year. Maybe that is it. The more you have to do, the faster time goes and the less demands on you, the slower?

But, your admonition is wise, we should try to slow things down, listen to and see the little things…not worry about the undone things. Our sense of urgency may very well be misplaced and there is time to slow down to take in life in all its variety and let chores wait.

Happy 2016 to you! And, I look forward the philosophies and photographs you will have this year!!

PS: Do you really see those monkeys on many mornings!!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Great reply, and I think when we were young we were just conscious of *everything* so time never escaped us (and we didn’t need to think of it linearly), unlike these days when occasionally I can make it through a whole day wondering if I ever was conscious 🙂 And agree fully on our perception of space at that age as well, such different minds than what we have today – and I too felt summer to be the same length as a school year. Thank you Judy and wish you a great 2016. As for the monkey ~ had them in the morning for only a couple of weeks 🙂 Cheers ~

      1. Judy Avatar

Wow, you are the first person I ever confessed my time perception with summer and the school year, who had the same perception. Maybe the others just lost touch with those childhood feelings or sense of time. Easy to do really!!

This is such a brilliant piece with phenomenal writing and photography to welcome the New Year. 😉 Those monkeys reminds me of the time we experienced from childhood to adulthood which links to the perception of time. I can totally relate to all that you said here…from the time waiting each day to pass by till the time I wonder how the time has flown…Time will only pass by faster as we grow older and the only thing we can do is to make the most out of it. It is why time is precious. ❤ This is not only a piece to welcome the New Year, but a piece to keep us questioning what is important in life and how we make the most out of it to be alive. 😉 All the best! 🙂

Another incredible piece Randall! I too grew up hearing adults say that my perception of time would change and that the days will begin to flash forward like an accelerating, mechanical flip clock. Lucid dreaming seemed to be a way of stretching out one’s days, but success at becoming aware in one’s dreams is rare, at best. The sure-fire way, Trish and I have discovered, is to travel. New experiences, where the landscapes, the languages, and ideas overload the brain, are the only way I can keep the days from blending into each other. And now, we have Hokkaido to visit in an effort to turn the hourglass on its side. ありがとうございました for yet another interesting read. 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Shawn ~ and I think you are correct with travel being an optimal way to stretch out time…new experiences, language, culture and people do overload the brain in a very positive way ~ and of course, the concept of lucid dreaming another fascinating way to stretch out the day. ありがとうございました Shawn for the comment, and looks as though you already have Hokkaido on the mind. Cheers!

You have created a masterpiece 🙂 About the topic on time, I think, as adults, we are involved in too many activities, assumed too many responsibilities so much so we keep thinking and saying “I have to do this and that”. As a result, we are not enjoying time, not living in the present because we are so consumed by that thought of having to do this and that. We are so caught up. Then once we have completed doing this and that, we realised, oh my god, where did the time go? Actually time was there but we didn’t notice it. The problem with the world and society is that if we slow down or relax and do nothing, we are labelled as lazy and unproductive. A conundrum, isn’t it?

Happy New Year, Randall, wishing you more travel adventures in 2016 albeit at a slower pace so that you may enjoy time, and the present 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Kat, and I think you’ve hit on the big reason time flies as we grow older ~ we are so filled up with stresses and pressures of modern life, by the time we’ve exhaled it is night time and we sleep just to repeat the cycle the next day. In the States everyone is so focused on linear time, one-thing-after-another (deemed efficient), but there are cultures around the world (Southern Europe and in Asia) where schedules and punctuality is almost non-existent… I think you will agree with me, though, that via travel we can definitely slow down time a bit and enjoy. Wishing you a great 2016 of health, happiness and travels ~

Thank you for a beautiful post and stunning photographs. It is amazing how your writings are so perfect, not a word out of place. Lovely tribute to the symbol of 2016, the Monkey. They look so wise, ready to take up the challenge of writing a masterpiece 🙂
When my daughter was six, she once complained that time goes by so quickly. She was upset because she was old and had to start school. Now I remembered how Dunbar from Catch 22 was slowing down time 🙂 There is no time in eternity, and who knows where the eternity starts. Wishing you a wonderful 2016!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Inese, this may be one of the best compliments I’ve received: “amazing how your writings are so perfect, not a word out of place.” However, I think that may be due to the above principle of the “infinite monkey theorem” where if I strike the keys often enough, I just might get it right at some point 🙂 The concepts of space and time can keep my mind occupied, with its the endless opportunities and belief in the impossible ~ it is why I am an optimist at heart. You’ve got it right, there is no time in eternity ~ wishing you the best in ’16.

      1. inesephoto Avatar

You make me smile:) I think the ‘infinite monkey theorem’ is a good idea for a ‘sensational’ post on April 1 this year 😉
It is wonderful that you are practicing believing in impossible things. How about believing in six impossible things before breakfast, as The Queen of Hearts suggested? 😉
Wishing you the best possible things in 2016!

Beautiful post, dear Dalo…. I liked the photographs and I found your thoughts very moving…
As I was reading them, I remembered a quite which I think is very accurate: “when You change the Way You look at things, the things You look at change”… In this sense, Time could be a relative variable…. And the Way we experience life is directly related to it, I guess….
I am wishing You the best for 2016… Peace, Love and Joy to You, Aquileana 🐯💫

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

You said the words that ring so true “time is a relative variable”. A person at sea-level will experience time differently from a person on the top of a mountain (they will be slightly younger) as will a person in motion versus one standing still 🙂 It is quite a great world/universe/life we live in, just need to take the time to enjoy and seek the answers. Wishing you a great 2016,and thank you Aquileana.

Why IS it that time flies when life is a playground and why does the unwanted task seem interminable?
And Dan Gilbert on the TED stage said younger and older people actually don’t experience time all that differently – we just remember it very differently. So it is memory that is our reality.

Randall, Your exquisite images coupled with your insightful writing make this post one of the most enjoyable I’ve read in a while. I will continue to ponder time as I go about my day and also the concept of memories comes into play, too. I need to go back and soak up (no pun intended!) your monkey portraits for a little while longer. The action shots are astounding and the different personalities that you’ve captured is revelatory. Thanks for starting my new year out right. Happy shooting in 2016!

Thank you Jane ~ the beginning of the New Year is always a rush for me (work and travel right up to the Chinese New Year), so it always feels like by the time I realize it is the new year I am entering March – at least a couple months behind 🙂 Wishing you a great weekend – and time to reflect on great memories. Cheers ~

Randall I am captivated by your images once more. What an amazing experience to see these monkeys. Your thoughts on time are interesting. It does speed up but even my children think it goes fast. I wonder is it because we have always too much going on and we should stop and be still for awhile. I guess it is different for all of us. Happy New Year to you I am trying to live in each moment and appreciate time and life.

Thank you very much Kath ~ I think it is always a good thing to step back and think about time. I think kids are great to be around as much as possible, as I think they keep the mind young (even though exhausting). Wishing you a great weekend.

Beautiful. I often become so absorbed by a place or thing that I lose all sense of time. I call it “being out of myself,” but maybe I’m just returning to my childhood. Thank you for a very interesting post.

“Being out of myself” that is a great description – always a great state to find yourself in. Cheers to a great year ahead.

Oh yes, slowing down the perception of time, what a task!
It takes a bit of trickery, it seems. : )
This is a gorgeous contemplation/meditation, Randall. I imagine it took you a while to write this, and yet, no time at all…

Wishing you a slow and beautiful year filled with exploration and adventure.
You never cease to create magic here with your writing and incredible images, thank you!

An exciting read from start to finish with photos that touch the heart and soul to phrases like “Our brains needed time to sort and organize reality”. This incredible production illustrates masterful talent in many areas.
Thank you for some great brain food. Enjoy all the days that make this new year.

Randall, what a masterful piece with which to commence 2016. Shawn and I have often discussed how time seems to proceed at different rates, either during various life chapters, or during different ‘themes’. Your friend’s words “Without adventure, life will fly right on by” surely resonated. I read a short piece the other day that was reflecting upon a similar topic, and after reading this author’s musings I soaked up his line: “Repetition doesn’t create memories. New experiences do.” Here it the article, if you want to continue on this theme: https://medium.com/@bchesky/how-to-time-travel-b604096d5ed0#.nes7s86ou

On a side note, Shawn and I have now inched Hokkaido up our must-see list a few more notches. Funny, because we just watched a program on Hokkaido’s cuisine a few days ago. How long were you there?

Here’s hoping your 2016 is replete with many new and rich life experiences! Please continue to share the thoughtful words and magnificent pictures that make them come to life.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Tricia, thank you very much for the link to the article ~ and I fully agree with the authors point of experiences being the powerful piece of creating memories (and an interesting life). It is also somewhat addicting, creating new memories/experiences 🙂 Your visit to Hokkaido will definitely brings many such memories…and while I was there for only 6 days, I remember the crispness and freshness of the food – both taste and presentation was elegant in a very natural way. I look forward to hearing of your adventures there. Cheers to making memories ~

I read this last night and thought ‘wow’. Time it makes so much sense! Are we really boring as adults … Maybe 😀 And did she wait for you? The adventure begins. She sounds like a great girl! Wonderful images … a thousand thanks 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha ~ yes, I think we become a bit boring as adults in terms of adventure and risk taking. I now hesitate a bit before doing something that in my teens I would not have thoughts twice about…however, I think our minds are so much more interesting as adults. It is exciting, actually. And of course, about the girl waiting for me on the other side of the lake ~ the adventure is in full swing, ha ~ ha. Thank you Julie, wishing you a great year ahead.

Hi Randall, every time you post a new blog, I think that you cannot possibly come up with anything better, but you do! These are my absolutely most favorite photos of yours, all of them are stunning…the light, colors, reflections in the water, textures and composition…and especially the subject matter! The monkeys are just so unbelievably cute, I just want to cuddle them to death lol. 😀
I hope that one day I will be fortunate enough to see them, probably on my way from Okunoshima-the Rabbit Island. :-p
Every photo perfectly illustrates the points you are making, there is a nice flow to it.

The topic of time is my favorite too, the relativity of it, our perception of time depending how old we are and what we are doing. I came to the same conclusions as you and your friend, that when we are young, everything is new to us and our brains are too busy processing everything, and as we grow -the more we know about our world, and the quicker time seems to by passing by. And you are right about technology speeding it even more. We humans are so clever inventing stuff and at the same time making our lives faster and seemingly shorter. I wonder, if time is faster for today’s kids then it was for us or our grandparents. Or how people perceived time thousand years ago, without watches, just the sun, the stars and seasons marking the time, their lifespans were shorter too…

For me time is an annoying chain dictating something that has to be done, every time I look at the clock I get a shock “Already?!”, and I am always rushing to get somewhere on time. :-p But it is not time is it, it’s us, we made a system that is at times not beneficial at all!

The monkey mother with her baby has a very knowing look, you can see her soul and a certain wisdom in her eyes. It’s like she says, “Oh, yeah, time – I know all about it, it’s not that important, there is so much more you humans don’t know…”

Ha, ha! Gia, your comment made my day today ~ and I figure it is a fitting post for the upcoming Chinese New Year, Year of the Monkey…and it also put me in the right mind to think about time. The past 2+ weeks have been long, full of work and travel, so it is nice to be able to reflect back on the year a bit now instead of months later when time is moving ever more quickly.

I too wonder about how people perceived time thousand years ago, isn’t it hard to imagine. I would imagine that the days moved a bit more slowly as we had to be somewhat patient about things: taking time to walk/ride into town and generally having expectations that things take time without watches, versus the rush that defines us and time today. Wishing you a very relaxing and beautiful weekend Gia. Take care ~

🙂 I am glad, it made you laugh, Randall. I have recently looked up timekeeping in history, and it is so very interesting! They knew more than I thought. I was aware of sun dials and hour glass, but I had no idea about “clepsydra” -a water clock, and how many centuries it took to improve the mechanisms (a small step every 100 years or so). It is astonishing that accurate timekeeping wasn’t invented until the 1930s (quartz oscillators) and the atomic clock after the WWII. Then microelectronics arrived in the 60s and by 1980s everyone had mass-produced wristwatches and clocks.

It is so fascinating. How must have the ancient persian water clock manager felt watching the water bowls fill, day in and day out. A usually clever and wise person. It seems such a meaningless task now.

It also made me realize that even thousands of years ago people were somehow bound by time. But you are right everything was slower due to the lack of other technology in every aspect of their life. I would love to go back and see an ancient city and people going about their life. I think we would be surprised on many levels of what they knew and had. I was shocked when I found out about the system of mirrors and lenses the artists used to “copy/trace” projections on their canvases, I, as a painter, felt so cheated that I was taught misinformation, and I could never reach the perfection of some very famous painters! Sorry that’s off topic, but it makes you think, doesn’t it?

I too was busy the last month, getting sidetracked into different kinds of creative projects lol Why is the world so interesting, there just isn’t enough TIME to absorb, learn and do everything, pun intended lol
I wish you an amazing year of the Monkey, may you produce even more magical photographs and accomplish everything your heart desires. Gia x

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Gia ~ something magical about how different cultures and at different periods in history we thought about time differently, but always felt a little bound by time regardless. Thank you and wishing you a great year too!
