Slowing Down the Perception of Time

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-2

I’ve made a mistake.

I look behind me, but there is no turning back. I’ve passed the point of no return.

The chill of frost has seeped further into my bones; the other side of the frozen lake appears just as far away as it did an hour ago. Or was it only a few minutes ago?

With snow blowing around, I bow my head and take a seat, lost in time.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-1

Earlier today, I met up with a friend, a theoretical physicist who has one of the best minds I’ve ever known. Her head is often in the clouds, and her optimism makes her irresistible in conversation.

The day started as it often does, walking along a path with coffee in hand amid a group of monkeys. Today, she brought up the infinite monkey theorem: given an infinite amount of time, a monkey at a typewriter would almost surely produce a piece of work such as the complete writings of Shakespeare.

Given the group’s low energy level, we agreed that our friends wouldn’t be delivering any masterpiece today.

However, this did get us talking about time and the few fleeting hours remaining in 2015 before the New Year arrived. As if on cue, we both said, “Time has flown by faster this year than ever before…” and with this, our discussion of time began.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-8

A topic very dear to her heart is the question of how our brain sees the world ~ how our brain organizes what we experience, sorts through the chaos, and creates a perception of reality so we can function effectively in this world.

Her enthusiasm is contagious.  I remember the first time she looked over her coffee and breathlessly whispered, “The only reality we know is what our brain manufactures…how we experience and feel time – it all happens within the mind,” followed by her smile and a mad-scientist laugh.

Mother & Child

“When I was a young kid, summer days seemed to go on forever. Every second of the day had something new to explore, my mind racing to understand and learn. Time did not matter.” She sat back and mused, her eyes on a baby monkey being cared for by her mother.

“A young child has no understanding of time; they live in the moment…being time as there is so much happening in their world, their brain is in the now, doing all it can to make sense of life.”

She is lost in thought but adds, “The adult interpretation of time is irrelevant to a child.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-13

I’ve always been fascinated by time, from the view of a physicist and the existence of time to the neuroscientist and our perception of time.

One early memory I have is of being a young kid floating in a pool of water, lost in thought about time. Thinking about why adults always say, “time goes by faster and faster as they get older…” I had no idea what this meant.

Whooper Swans Lake Mashuko - Perception of Time-3

As I grew older, I started to feel like time was speeding up, but it wasn’t until recently that I began to take it seriously, sensing time passing at an increasingly rapid rate. It is alarming.

The honking of the geese above signals the alarm as well, time speeding away out of reach. The bite of the cold wind sends shivers down my spine. Strangely, it is a feeling I am relishing – this rush of a new experience.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-6

“This is the frustrating thing about life,” she nods at me, eyes sparkling again, “when we were young, our minds were spinning. Our brain receives so much information, often out of order, that it needs time to process and reorganize all the new ideas so we can understand the reality we are living in.”

She pauses wistfully, “Our brains needed time to sort and organize reality, so our perception of time was longer when we were young. We extended time. This may be the key to extending life today.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-9

“Fast forward to us as adults, and the world is familiar.  Information can be processed quickly,” and with a sigh, she takes another sip of coffee. “Thus, our perception of time is shorter. Time flies by.”

“Add to this our repetitive routines, modern technology efficiently processing information, and time begins to pass quicker every year.  We continue to provide the fuel by getting in a rut, spiraling quickly downward with time.”

Her gaze landed on the far side of the lake, and she added, “Days quickly turn into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years until one day *poof* we look back and it is over.”

She paused, and I was surprised to see tears well up in her eyes. “I feel as if time has tricked me and I am spinning out of control.”

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-5

Her tears slowly rolled down her cheek, each representing a dream disappearing into the annals of time.

She wiped the tears away and exclaimed, “It is sad, we get older and our brain becomes efficient because we are boring!” She laughed. “Without adventure, life will fly right on by.”

Her eyes lock in on mine, and I am surprised how a discussion of physics can increase my heart rate and make my palms sweaty. “We need to find a way to extend our time…”

“We need to explore new sensations, overload the brain, and perhaps then we can stretch out time just like we did when we were young,” the glimmer in her eyes not seeking approval.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-15

We walked a few more steps before her words hit me like a wave of cold water.

She whispered, “Let’s be spontaneous.” Pointing across the lake, she added, “Your adventure begins with a trek across the lake. I’ll wait for you at the hot springs on the other side…and together we’ll try to stop time, at least for tonight.”

Stunned by her words, my mind went blank, and I looked toward a monkey for help. Fortunately, he was a wise one and seemed to understand my situation.  He nodded, so I looked at her and did the same.

With a quick peck on my cheek, she grabbed her keys and headed out to the car, leaving me stranded.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-14

This is how I find myself in this predicament, lost on Lake Mashu-ko. I look ahead where I believe the hot springs lie and sigh…it seems I’ve been out here forever, and the other side is still so far away.

Time, a concept impossible to define, but definitely worth contemplating as 2015 comes to an end.  My goal for the New Year is to slow down time.

Japanese Macaque Snow Monkey - Perception of Time-10

I look at my watch and realize I’ve been out here for only 10 minutes.  Yes, this is a good sign, and my laughter echoes off the surrounding mountains.

With my heart beating and my brain working overtime, I pick up the pace.  I figure that whether or not she is there waiting for me doesn’t really matter.  The adventure has begun.  From across the lake, a cry from a white-tailed sea eagle reminds me of the words of Eleanor Roosevelt:

The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

I look ahead, and no one has to tell me, life is short, getting shorter.  Make time in 2016 to explore.  To slow down and take in all life has to offer.

Gorgeous photos and post Randall. You are lucky to have a wise friend who helps remind you to slow down and savor life. To more adventures and savoring in 2016. I’m glad I popped out of my sabbatical to read this. Happy New Year! Brad

Every now and then I have to be reminded to slow things down and savor life ~ and I’m never disappointed when I do. Wishing you a great start to 2016 and look forward to hearing of your adventures in the new year. Take care and flow with what the year brings.

Thanks Randall. I need lots of reminders. That is part of my plan in taking a digital holiday. to more adventures and savoring in 2016.

Indeed, adventures and exploring are good thoughts to have in ’16 (and getting away from tech…although I am quite addicted to it). Cheers.

Randall, Randall, randall. Only you could turn these wonderfully expressive captures of such beautiful creatures into a discussion of time and our perception of it. I suppose your post (delicious beyond words as always) resonated with me because I too have been finding the increasingly accelerated passage of time a reason for thought and concern. To slow down time–an excellent goal for the coming year. I shall join you in your quest! Happy New Year to you as well my friend!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha ~ the monkeys made for a perfect audience as they were the only ones who would sit there and listen to my diatribe about time 🙂 I had to form this post around them… While has been an uncomfortable feeling to have time zoom by so quickly, the quest to slow-down time is much more enjoyable…and hopefully it turns out to make 2016 one of the best years yet. It will be the Year of the Monkey on the Chinese calendar, so I think we’re off to a good start. Wish you the best in the New Year Tina, thank you very much for all the great posts in ’15.

Beautiful post. I was tearing up reading this. Happy New Year! May time be kind and wait for us to catch up.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Wouldn’t that be the best, if time could just stop every now & then for us 🙂 Wishing you a great start to the New Year Tosha, it should be one to remember.

  5. Mary Tang Avatar

I had to scroll back to look at the photographs as I was too absorbed in your story to notice them. The landscape and the faces of the monkeys do look timeless. They say a picture paints a thousand words but I’m a word person! 🙂 Time DOES slow down at this end of life and nothing is urgent anymore so don’t worry about it. The brain – it’s a foreign concept to the Chinese because we don’t include the brain as a major organ or the focus of any energy channels. Its function is merely mechanical and ruled by other elements and energy channels throughout the body, according to Chinese medicine. The difference between east and west.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I figured with the Year of the Monkey just around the corner, who better than are closest cousins to help understand the perception of time 🙂 Chinese medicine continually amazes me, but I wasn’t aware that the brain was not considered as a major organ…fascinating. As much as I do enjoy photography, like you Mary, there is nothing quite as nice as diving into words and a story. I do look forward to when time does finally start to slow down a bit ~ thank you Mary and wishing you a great 2016 of health and happiness.

Yes, we will welcome the Fire Monkey in February so your photographs are timely as well as timeless 🙂

Fitting more in; experiencing more; making new discoveries certainly will go some way to recreating the experience of childhood when time moved slower. Various suggestions have been made as to how to slow down time. Some suggested that Eric Clapton (1960s) guitar solos did the trick. My son feels that time practically stops if you arrive at a railway station too far in advance of your train. The music of Hildegard of Bingen has the effect of removing me from the time spectrum; it simply has no great meaning while the singing continues.
On the infinite monkey theorem I like the late English Comic Linda Smith’s idea that never mind waiting for the Complete Works of Shakespeare, she’d be happy for them to get round to typing “Hey Hey! We’re the Monkeys”
Happy New You to You Randall. Have a good one!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, this is an epic reply. Clapton’s solos indeed come close to stopping time, and I cannot think of a better response to the infinite monkey theorem than Linda’s, just perfect. But I need to thank you for introducing the music of Hildegard of Bingen to me, her works have accompanied throughout the first day of the New Year and to say I am impressed with this lady is an understatement. Cheers to you Simon, and wish you a great start to ’16.

Stunning pictures Randall! The expressions of those monkeys are priceless, it’s a marvel how you have captured them! These pictures already give the message that slowing down may be just a perception but it rewards rich dividends.
Wishing you many more wonderful clicks in 2016. Happy New Year! 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you very much Balroop, as you say, realizing how the perception of time works does payout great dividends ~ makes it easier to stretch out and enjoy time as much as we can. Wishing you a great year ahead of writing and inspiring, Happy New Year.

Beautiful images and great words to ponder as we move into a new year. I have noticed that when I travel to new places and do new things, time does seem to stretch. But the older I get, the years peel off at an alarming rate as I circle down the vortex of my life. I don’t think there really is much I can do to slow it down. 😉 Acceptance of my mortality is inevitable, even though this is a terrific party that I never want to leave!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Eliza, I think travel (or just dreaming or reading) can have this great affect of slow down time a bit, but I will have to agree with you Eliza, there isn’t really too much we can do to slow down time noticeably, and it is almost calming if we just accept it and enjoy the party for as long as we can 🙂 Wishing you a great 2016.

Such incredible photos, and accompanied by a very touching, tender and apropos story on this night of endings (or beginnings, your choice!) Hm…run with Adlai Stevenson with his ““Don’t be afraid to live, to live hard and fast, because it is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that count” or The Stone’s “Time Waits for No One” or possibly most fitting for you and your friend, Picasso “It takes a very long time to become young.”

    Best wishes in 2016!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Gotta like Adlai Stevenson’s quote, as it is the quality of life that counts… Thank you for the thoughts for the New Year, I believe it is going to be a great one. Cheers to the long time it takes to become young again ~

  19. dfolstad58 Avatar

The subject of time is an interesting one and your post and choice of photos I liked. Why these photos? I thought about time yesterday as I tried to slow down and just colour a page in an adult coloring book. I found it difficult. What does that mean? Is that typical? You watch a child engage in something and they don’t rush to the next accomplishment, they enjoy the taste of the moment, chewing it carefully not washing it down quickly for a bite of the future. May we all enjoy every taste of our day like a child.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Some of the best yet simplest moments in life, is watching just what you described: “a child engage in something and they don’t rush to the next accomplishment” and they simply enjoy what is in front of them, fully engaged. Time does not matter. Very well said, and wish you a great year ahead ~ and hopefully we all will be younger at the end of the year than when we started.

  20. Healing Grief Avatar

This is such a powerful post Randall. Time is an illusion and how we see and experience this time, is up to us. For me, time only speeds up when I am not living in this precious moment. When my mind is busy in the future or the past, I miss signs and opportunities. In the stillness, I feel alive and I am grateful for everything. Your photos are amazing and the monkeys display such human emotion on their faces. Your thoughts express a universal sentiment about time.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you very much for your kind words Karen, and I agree with you ~ time is an illusion and what we make of it is of our own doing…a lot of power in this way of thinking. Being aware of time, of the now we are in, tends to slow things down for me and hopefully I will be doing more of it in the New Year ~ wish you the best.

Happy new year dear friend and yes, we got old and our brains got boring…though fitting your mind/brain and boring in the same sentence is quite difficult 🙂

As we grow older time flies by faster and fear creeps in our lives. But by realizing that, we should keep our fear at bay, enjoy the most of whatever we are doing, try new things, explore the world, and time will slow down again… only if we stop thinking and worrying about it. Happy New Year, Randall!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Very well said Bama, getting out and exploring the world is the best way to keep our fears at bay. The benefit too is that time will slow down and we can make of it what we choose. Cheers to the New Year.

This is such a timely post as we say goodbye to a year that was and hello to a year that will be. While routine and modern technology may go some way in making time slip away from us, that probably is also because we are always so focused on the future – so focused on looking forwards and anticipating the next best thing. But the best moments are always in the now. Time, it is what we make of it and how we look at it. Slow down, appreciate time, and learn to be best friends with time.

Love the photos in this post, Randall. I love monkeys, and so it was lovely looking at them on the first day of the new year. Wonderful work. Stay safe, be good, and best wishes for the year ahead 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

So true, always looking ahead that we forget about what is in front of us today ~ I am often guilty of this, just my nature. Great post! Although I wonder if being busy with interesting things would really slow down time. They do say time flies when you’re having fun. I’d rather have life seem faster if it’s interesting, but your point is well taken – savor the moment to draw it out.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

This is a great thought Dave ~ I think that as we get older, we are no longer absorbed in everything that comes our way. Instead during the repetitive/boring aspects of life our mind just clicks off and our subconscious takes over…we do not really think but instead just respond (this is actually how I travel through airports these days, like a robot 🙂 ). Engage and run with time, I like the way you put it and agree that we have to savor the good times. Cheers to a great ’16.

  37. Uncle Tree Avatar

HaPPy NeW YeaR, Randall! Thank you for all the thoughtful entertainment you provided for us last year! Looking forward to more…aren’t we all? Monkeying around like kids is for sure the way to play on these grounds rooted in Time and Space.

Yesterday, an old thought returned; a thought birthed from the far-sighted thoughts of Hermann Hesse.
Oh, yes, we do long for permanence. Who doesn’t wish to be remembered 2000 years from now, in 4016? Looks weird, doesn’t it? Add 10,000: 12,016 — looks more like a number used to count inventory, not years; not human years anyway, nor an ape’s.

So, I ask myself: What is the goal of humanity, if we cannot make a permanent dent on the reality of a physical universe? Or, perhaps, does our existence reflect the fact we are currently the living result of a permanent dent; the impregnated bulge, which pulses time away into the God-thought of Infinity?

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Nothing like thinking about time to end the year ~ looking to make a big dent or a series of small ones this coming year. Wishing you a great ’16, with health and happiness.

What a magnificent New Year’s gift you have given your readers, Dalo. The images: such profound soul in those faces. What an incredible place. The words. The words. Time is something I’ve been pondering lately, maybe because I also suddenly feel it speeding up. Not too long ago, I sat and wondered some of the very things you and your friend discussed. I tried to really understand what time is. My mind meandered and I actually got scared by the immensity of it all. May your 2016 be long and bountiful.

Yes, to a year of new awareness and adventures ~ nothing quite like experiences to stretch time, although I too could go for a warmer climate. Those monkeys seemed perfectly content in their world and who knows, perhaps they’ve got it all worked out – they were helpful models for me. Wishing you a great 2016. Take care.

Such a thorough depiction, both image and thought. I think.. in fact, I am ..speechless. I’m fascinated by the notion of time, myself. The feel of it, so to say. Even my post tonight smoothly touched upon the idea of time and our perception of it. But your post.. simply amazing! A wonderful 2016!

Thank you very much Nicole ~ the mystery of time is something I think will always move a poet’s heart. I think the first days of the New Year’s Day are smiling… Wish you a great ’16.

Dare I say, this is your most compelling and endearing piece that I have read from you, Randy. Both visually and through your words, you have conveyed those thoughts that haunt each of us that see the acceleration of time and wonder where and why it has been so unkind to us. Of all the sciences, I have always felt most drawn to physics. Now, I have an even better reason to feel that way. Thank you, to both you and your friend, for providing such a reflective look at 2015 and a hopeful view of the year ahead.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Very much appreciate this comment Dave, a great way to start the New Year. I absolutely agree with you re: the study of physics, as it has evolved so much recently. I cannot think of a great field of study ~ from the quantum world, through philosophy and neuroscience to cosmology ~ physics brings them all together. Thank you again and look forward to reading and learning more from you and wishing you and yours an incredible new year ahead.

This was quite mind blowing! Yes, I feel time is speeding by, too, and this life we have in the physical world is precious, all of it, every physical sensation, and every emotional one. I dont want it to rush by before I have experienced it all, yet my ability to do so is limited, and today I stood on the side of a mountain in a storm which kept me from the top and told myself I was happy and fortunate to have experienced what nature allowed me. But there is no getting away from the fact that it is strange to witness your body aging when inside you still feel 20.

Beautiful images, as always, and I wonder, was your friend waiting for you at the springs? Hope 2016 is good to you.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Ali ~ like me, I want to experience all I can in this life… I hope to still feel like I am 20 when I hit 100, and figure as long as I keep that as a goal, I’ll be alright. While life will continue to zoom by, I will cherish the small moments that come along and make time stand still. Wish you the very best in the coming year…

Such a beautiful post Randall , and what a wonderful Goal to set yourself for 2016.. To slow down Time..
In our everyday busy world where we are so controlled by the hands of a clock, time is often found lacking as it ticks continuously ever faster through our perceptions..
I gave up wearing a watch when I retired last year.. You should try that during a day.. and listen to your internal clock.. I often walk out in the woods with my husband who is never without his watch 🙂 and would test myself on seeing how I gage time .. And I would never be more than 10 minutes out when I would guess the hands on his watch.. 🙂

It is true our perception of time increases. The more absorbed I am within a task, time can vanish in a blink of an eye, and yet at other times a moment seems to last an age..

I loved reading your conversation with your friend. And so fell in love with these Wonderful Monkey’s that keep warm in the warm springs during winter.. What a wonderful experience to witness first hand… I especially love the Mother holding the sleeping baby, the look in her eyes held me spell bound.. Would that we could communicate through our eyes and hearts… 🙂

Many thanks Randall for the gifts you bring this New Year… May it allow Time to stop still as you yourself stop Time within the moments you capture…
Wishing you and yours a very Happy 2016 and Beyond.. and I so thank you for your own generous comments upon my blog posts..

    Blessings
    Sue 🙂

Thank you very much for the thoughtful post Sue ~ sometimes I think when we get caught up in a dreary day our mind just flips to auto-pilot, and we consciously do not take in the small, great pieces of life/time. Hoping this coming year will see myself getting lost in the excitement of what I am doing (even if it is a mundane task)…I figure if I can do that, I will have succeeded in slow down time. Wishing you the best in the New Year.

      1. Sue Dreamwalker Avatar

I am sure if you see these NOW Moments as gifts never to be captured again.. You will then learn to get lost in seeing them all as exciting moments to be treasured, even if it appears to be a mundane repeated task.. 🙂 Life gives us all the opportunities to slow down time.. For time after all is only an Illusion.. 😉
Blessings in all the things you do in 2016.. 🙂 I know it will hold many exciting Moments yet to be captured 😀

Randall, you have to promise me you’ll let me know how to slow time down when you figure it out. You promise? My wife loves to remind me,on occasion, that my perception is my reality. She also quickly reminds me that it may not be hers. 😊 Wishing you and your all the best in Happy New Year! Check out some of my favorite photographs from 2015 including a few aerials from Pine Island Sound. the new year.

Ha, yes the beauty and danger about time is that it is relative…except for in some cases like wives. Thank you Ron and wish you and yours great happiness and health in the New Year, as well as continued great photography. Cheers ~

To have impact on someone’s life in some way is an honor you can’t get from cheap imagery…. well… you do it all the time. A photograph can be more real than life SOMETIMES… a language that lets us to live and analyze, a tool that, with a little bit of imagination, can make us dream…. and even this is is something you are able to do all the the time.

Oh.. and the last picture! That must be you 🙂 immersed in the lush greenery of a vast forest and wonderful lake… on your way to the new 2016….

Thank you… I really thank you.

Beautiful Lu, and when a soul can find something more in a photograph than in real life ~ that says something special not only about the photographer but the person viewing as well. To great dreams and growing imagination in the New Year, a year that holds endless (and timeless) possibilities. Wish you well, and thank you.
