Arches ~ Temptation of the Exotic

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-1

She sits there quietly with the glow of the morning sun reflecting everything a beautiful day should contain. I pace around in search for the perfect angle to enjoy her, and as I look on with eyes filled with desire I set my camera and capture my first sunrise at Arches.

A thought enters my mind…have I just fallen in love?

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-2

Stretching out, I close my eyes and sigh.  Relaxing under her arch, comfortable with the idea I am experiencing something amazingly new; I consider the gnawing question of “why am I here?”

This thought wriggles around a bit in the back of my mind, but fades as the warmth of the sun and the soft whispers and laughter of the wind allows me to drift off to dream.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-16

Somewhere up north nestled in the Olympic National Forest lies Ellinor, waiting for me and whose love I’ve professed many times. I’ve grown up with her.  Shared many summers and winters wrestling with her, the magnificence of her peaks as well as her wicked sense of humor.

Well, her wicked sense of humor will be something I will have to be wary of from this point forward, as news will eventually leak of this tremendous one-night stand I’ve had here in Arches.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-4

Looking down on me now are the eyes of Mother Nature taking stock of her beautiful daughters scattered throughout this land, and the foolish men who try to take them as their own.

Admittedly, I wonder if Mother Nature is planning her revenge, annoyed at me stealthily working my way into another of her daughter’s dreams.

Then again love is never meant to be easy.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-88

While there is something special returning from a journey or simply escaping life to find Ellinor waiting for me arms open, there is also something special in diving into something new, a sense of freedom speckled with risk and danger.

Mother Nature knows this fact well, within hearts is a desire to pursue. Bravery to chase an undefined destiny and embrace a new challenge. She has admired such and with this thought I beg for her understanding.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-6

Instead of racing up to embrace Ellinor and run my fingers over her once again, I stole out of Seattle and roared down south listening to the inviting whispers of Arches, one of Ellinor’s magnificent cousins.

Leaving behind my steady girl in search for another I am guessing has annoyed Mother Nature, but I figure this is something she has faced since the beginning of time. People running roughshod over her, with appreciation for her beauty and little else.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-19

The thrill of the pursuit never gets old, and Arches has shown me the risk I take is well worthwhile.

With the evening fading, I rise up and rest against a boulder, glancing at her boldness once again, where the glow of her skin shifts from the soft light of the morning sun to darkness as starlight now basks upon her; the night air tangling up around her, taking her to bed for the night.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-7

As with Ellinor, the awe and excitement of Arches is naturally breathtaking, with added electricity generated by the unusual and striking differences between the two.

Her feel is different.  Her smell.  Her sounds.

She ignites freshness from the very core of my soul, lighting a fire of new ideas and dreams.  One taste, and it is impossible not to reach for the unknown and hold her forever.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-9

Strangely, the exotic and unknown is something people often fear and avoid. A veil of fear hiding the joys of what life can offer. A veil for sleepwalking through life, afraid of what is different.

Instead, look at the exotic as a gift. The lure of the mysterious is a catalyst for discovery, where new ideas, growth and innovation begins.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-13

As I lay on the ground staring up into the peaceful sky, Arches brings out this curiosity and the lure of possibilities. What is out there?

I hear her words floating around, softly within my dreams and as whispers within the wind. Sweetly telling me to ignore the drone of modern life and wrap myself up into her inviting arms.

Traveling from the temperate rain forest of Ellinor, where new shades of green highlight every visit, to the extreme of the high-desert of Arches, where stunning shades of color seize the senses.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-10

Last night, under a midnight-black sky a perfect song flicked on the radio, the words of Ellinor lighting up the road ahead:

“Go on and close your eyes, go on imagine me there.  She’s got similar features with longer hair, and if that’s what it takes to get you through ~ Go on and close your eyes, it shouldn’t bother you…”

–  Melissa Etheridge, “Similar Features

Her words a bit harsh, but I had to find her so I closed my eyes and hit the gas.  If all turned out the way I dreamt it to be, my reward would be witnessing the arching of her back in delight as she accepted me as one who was worthy.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-20

Arches brings to me the diverse look of Mother Earth, one to be embraced: an attraction from deep in the heart, full of uncertainty. Something new, similar to the excitement found around the world: a new culture, a different shade of skin or an intriguing philosophy of life.

Nothing can break the strong bonds I hold for Ellinor, she is family and I’ve shared my deepest and greatest secrets with her. However, life is not all a temperate rain forest and Arches has seen to that…

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-8

Extremes exist and instead of lashing out in fear at differences, life is more interesting when embracing the mystery. Ellinor may be upset as I continue my courtship with Arches, but it is while she blushes as new hikers arrive to test her slopes, biting her lip as she feels their exotic touch.

Inspiration is one gift nature gives daily, without thought of creed or race, creating one family respectful and caring for the beauty of Mother Nature and her daughters.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-12

Arches.  The allure of colors and your perfume floating in the wind are what makes this land great and keeps us coming back for more.

My return to Ellinor will be fueled by the intense feelings we shared this summer.  Your bite of inspiration and temptation towards the exotic heightens the meaning of love.

As I again rest my head on my earthen pillow, I hear Ellinor softly whispering to me again: “Go on and close your eyes, go on imagine me there…”

The great monumental shapes are absorbing various light values to them but staying untouched by the human hand with the camera. Convincing.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Very perceptive YR, the red sandstone would change with the light and remains a perfect example of the power of Mother Nature. Thank you ~

Thank you for replying. I tried to say that without your respect for the nature landscape could have lost its virginity in spite of sandstone’s properties . 🙂

Ah yes, very good and so correct ~ respect for nature should always come first. 🙂

Such amazing way you have of wedding word to photograph! I don’t think I’ve come across another soul who does quite what you do. Keep up the excellent, inspirational work!

I like your description of wedding word and photo ~ not too many things I enjoy more, and with Arches, the place is full of stories. Every photo can tell a few stories, so I grab the ones that appeal to me. Thank you much K’lee and wish you a great weekend.

Fantastic! When I was a child, my parents subscribed to National Geographic and kept every issue on the family bookshelf. Years went by, and soon the shelves became filled with those yellow bindings packed with incredible images and stories. Reading your posts remind me of turning the pages of those magazines with bated breath – waiting for the next photograph that would baffle the imagination. Tricia and I have yet to visit Arches National Park. But, after having our imaginations baffled by the vibrant colors of the images above, we will endeavor to visit soon. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Yes, the photos of National Geographic had the same affect on me ~ wondering about the magic of those foreign places. Thank you Shawn, you and Tricia would find yourselves in heaven…two National Parks in the area and a great city of Moab and Colorado River to explore. I look forward to reading, hearing and watching your travels there 🙂

I’ve seen many images of the treasures in Arches National Park and your shots rival the best of them. I have never had the pleasure of visiting this amazing place, but your images are so breathtakingly beautiful, so inviting, so compelling, and your writing so evocative, that for a moment I thought I was actually transported there. Well, it sure felt like it. Thanks for taking me there, Randall. Beautiful post, as always. ~ Jeannie :))

You have captured the unique beauty of the Arches with great passion. And indeed, with love. When I look at your pictures, I can hear the hum of the universe and the whispers of times passed. And, ever so faintly, the soft voice of Mother Nature granting a permission to fall in love with any or all of her daughters 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Arches amazes for the beauty it give us, and as you lead to the incredible geological history holding stories of how it evolved and all the eyes that witnessed it over time. And yes, Mother Nature in her heart of hearts, happy to have us all fall in love with her daughters ~ Thank you and wish you a great weekend.

A sight to see, maybe a bit like the red-rock in Australia…but Arches does offer the vastness of the area and its carved out canyons along with the arches to make it something to see if you have a chance.

It’s irresistible, contrasting the desert and our PNW lush green-ness. I really like that about living here – the notion that it’s pretty easy to take a trip into the desert, and it will be completely different than home. I love both. When I lived on the east coast I loved the Caribbean, but this is a bigger contrast. And you know, it’s both! Beautiful photos, especially the night ones!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The contrast really drew me in…coming from Eastern Oregon, I get the high desert attraction, but the arches, canyons and colors were at the other end compared to our PNW beauty 🙂 The Caribbean…a place that is calling my name ~ cheers to a good week.

Yes, I have heard Northern Arizona has some of the most amazing landscapes in the West…most people I met in Moab had (or had planned) to hit N. Arizona. Mystical is a great word to use to describe these places. Wish you great travels ~

    Dear Dalo,
I always savour my visits here, as you share your world viewed from your eyes and lens of perspective.. You sharpen our focus upon the details which Mother nature shares in all her wonder to what is important..
Her vast experience of allowing her features to be calved through time, the waters of which have washed over and under her arches into her caves to bring a richness of delights that takes your breath away..

” Her feel is different. Her smell. Her sounds.
She ignites freshness from the very core of my soul, lighting a fire of new ideas and dreams. One taste, and it is impossible not to reach for the unknown and hold her forever.”

Beautiful words Dalo, All of it is a stunning masterpiece, a marriage of emotions and visuals, that have delighted my own ‘senses’ .. As you know I love nothing better than walking among Nature, Rocks, stones, Woodland all have their energy, each a story to tell if we but take the time to observe and listen.. 🙂

I can not tell you how much pleasure your posts bring Dalo.. I ponder and pause over each photograph taking in their wonder..
And the delightful one at the end brought it to a wonderful conclusion.. And the Song I had not heard before, but I replayed again while browsing once again.

Wishing you a wonderful beginning of the week..
    Blessings to you and Yours
    Sue

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

You say it better than I ever could Sue, Mother Nature is a genius “the waters of which have washed over and under her arches into her caves to bring a richness of delights that takes your breath away” ~ when anyone is able to capture the spirit of a place, good times definitely do follow. I suppose this is why it is important to give in to what feels right and let nature take its course. Cheers to a great autumn Sue ~

Randall, your sensuous weaving of prose and photo is bar none, the most unique I have ever come across. Your talent for both the camera and the written word, and your compelling passion for Mother, astounds me. I fumble and grapple for words that will do your work justice. To be in your shoes for just a day, to visit these Sacred Sites as you do, how this Heart of mine yearns. For now, I live my Dreams through you. How you describe Mother as the “personal” and your Love again astounds me for it is something I so relate to. How special you are! Every time I come to view your work I am moved to tears, I hold my breath in wonder and in awe, and I am humbled by your glorious portrayal in prose and photo of the Glorious Wonders Mother is. Wow. Absolute wow. The Energy here rocks my soul. Thank you from the bottom of my Heart. Thank you, Randall, for giving me such a Gift today as you gave me. Love, Amy ❤

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

This comment made my day Amy ~ there is something to be said about finding those simple but brilliant things in nature, and bringing them to life in another medium as you do so well (photography, painting, words…). 39. Judy Avatar

I am in agreement with Amy Rose on the sensuous treatment of a relationship with a living, breathing Mother earth. Beautifullly writ as they say!! Also, when I saw the title, and I know Arches is not Keyhole Canyon, but the Temptation of the Exotic, I thought you might be writing about the recent deaths of the 7 hikers. The temptation to experience Mother Nature on her own terms in an exotic and primitive setting is very compelling for photographers and adventurers alike. While our love affair with such places is understandable, it is always best to remember to read her moods as carefully and we mere humans can. I would love to visit Arches though as I also love geology and the magnificent evidence of powerful forces within the Earth as we see in the rock formations. I love Garden of the Gods in Colorado too for that reason. I envy you your many adventures!! Thanks for an utterly lovely post.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

The temptation of the exotic definitely has this dark side, and our national & state parks bring out the primitive urge in us to explore and it can be easy to forget that our love for these lands in a certain sense is unrequited, for Mother earth sees death as just a part of living. And we can lose sight of such danger… You mention the death of those 7 hikers, and their or a similar story would be good to tell so we can reflect on the dangers as well as the beauty. Wish you a great week.

      1. Judy Avatar

The basic thing really when putting yourself in confrontation with Mother Earth is to simply prepare properly and that act alone gives her respect. Beyond that you do your best to experience and live to tell the tale. I can only hope in the more tragic outcomes that the adventurers lives were filled with wonderful experiences and that they died doing what they loved. Since I have a strong fear of heights, I must be an arm chair explorer sometimes and there is where you appreciate what others are willing to do and the stories and images they bring back to share. The one time I did put myself in a precarious situation on a steep slope, I was sorely afraid but once I’d climbed up to the plateau the relief was euphoric. The price too high for me though…I’ll have to be a flatlander.

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

While I can understand the thrill of climbing and being in unsettling situations, as there is nothing quite like it in nature…but after the age of 30+ we begin to understand mortality. A quote from a friend went something like “a thin gauze of uncertainty enters our mind and fearlessness vanishes and panic is just below the surface…” and best be aware of your situations. Thanks Judy.

Many people think Canyon de Chelly is more spectacular than the Grand Canyon. For me there is nothing that competes with Grand C. Winslow, flagstaff, and Monument Valley. You will love it!

Listen at Antelope Canyon there is a special time just for photographers which you pay more but well with it to get spectacular images. If you go at the regular tour time is very full of people in a tiny space. Google it!

How cool is this ~ THANK YOU!!! I just checked it out, and the tour for photographers only is run by members of the Navajo so probably get a great history as well as shooting. Now I am even more excited 🙂

Well actually both canyons on Nav Nation are guided by NAV guide. Native People are reticent. But younger guides are more chatty. The Canyon de Chelly history is amazing as well as legends. There is a good motel at on the Nation called Thunderbird and a buffet restaurant. If you have time and money take full day your of Chelly instead of half day tour.

Do check Monument Valley also on Nav Nation. Stay at least one night in NAV motel , built on ridge. All rooms have view of canyon. SUNRISE! You drive through Canyon. On your own. Breathtaking. Highly recommend sunset tour by Nav guide. Off road in jeep , see things you miss on your own.

Fabulous as always Randall – the night shots are my favorite. Just after my jealous admiration of your way with words. Beautifully, lovingly done!!

Thank you Tina, the night shots were quite fun…my first serious attempt and such photos, so happy with the results. The very late nights and early mornings made it an exhausting trip, but I did fall in love with the place so of course it was worth it 🙂

I am speechless. Everything I say will be a cliché. How beautiful this world is, and the way you capture it in words and images never fails to take my breath away.

Thank you so much Ali, it is a look at a piece of the world that is so different from what I normally see (and far from Ireland too!), it is hard not to be in awe of such a place. Wishing you a great week and autumn.

Fantastic!! Priceless piece of artistic combination of words and photos, Randall. Your dedicated love to your work and Mother Nature makes our hearts jump with joy. This is so well done.

Thank you Dina ~ the number of great places on this earth (both large and small) is quite staggering. It is great that we are able to share views (both written and photographed). Wish you well ~

Jeez this is amazing. It’s so rare to capture the breadth of such landscapes, you do a great job

Thanks Darcy. This area of the States (SW) is stunning – it blew away my expectations, in fact parts of it were so daunting that I just had to say “the hell with it” and started taking photos otherwise I would have walked away with nothing.
