Arches ~ Temptation of the Exotic

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-1

She sits there quietly with the glow of the morning sun reflecting everything a beautiful day should contain. I pace around in search for the perfect angle to enjoy her, and as I look on with eyes filled with desire I set my camera and capture my first sunrise at Arches.

A thought enters my mindโ€ฆhave I just fallen in love?

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-2

Stretching out, I close my eyes and sigh.  Relaxing under her arch, comfortable with the idea I am experiencing something amazingly new; I consider the gnawing question of โ€œwhy am I here?โ€

This thought wriggles around a bit in the back of my mind, but fades as the warmth of the sun and the soft whispers and laughter of the wind allows me to drift off to dream.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-16

Somewhere up north nestled in the Olympic National Forest lies Ellinor, waiting for me and whose love Iโ€™ve professed many times. Iโ€™ve grown up with her.  Shared many summers and winters wrestling with her, the magnificence of her peaks as well as her wicked sense of humor.

Well, her wicked sense of humor will be something I will have to be wary of from this point forward, as news will eventually leak of this tremendous one-night stand Iโ€™ve had here in Arches.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-4

Looking down on me now are the eyes of Mother Nature taking stock of her beautiful daughters scattered throughout this land, and the foolish men who try to take them as their own.

Admittedly, I wonder if Mother Nature is planning her revenge, annoyed at me stealthily working my way into another of her daughterโ€™s dreams.

Then again love is never meant to be easy.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-88

While there is something special returning from a journey or simply escaping life to find Ellinor waiting for me arms open, there is also something special in diving into something new, a sense of freedom speckled with risk and danger.

Mother Nature knows this fact well, within hearts is a desire to pursue. Bravery to chase an undefined destiny and embrace a new challenge. She has admired such and with this thought I beg for her understanding.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-6

Instead of racing up to embrace Ellinor and run my fingers over her once again, I stole out of Seattle and roared down south listening to the inviting whispers of Arches, one of Ellinorโ€™s magnificent cousins.

Leaving behind my steady girl in search for another I am guessing has annoyed Mother Nature, but I figure this is something she has faced since the beginning of time. People running roughshod over her, with appreciation for her beauty and little else.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-19

The thrill of the pursuit never gets old, and Arches has shown me the risk I take is well worthwhile.

With the evening fading, I rise up and rest against a boulder, glancing at her boldness once again, where the glow of her skin shifts from the soft light of the morning sun to darkness as starlight now basks upon her; the night air tangling up around her, taking her to bed for the night.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-7

As with Ellinor, the awe and excitement of Arches is naturally breathtaking, with added electricity generated by the unusual and striking differences between the two.

Her feel is different.  Her smell.  Her sounds.

She ignites freshness from the very core of my soul, lighting a fire of new ideas and dreams.  One taste, and it is impossible not to reach for the unknown and hold her forever.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-9

Strangely, the exotic and unknown is something people often fear and avoid. A veil of fear hiding the joys of what life can offer. A veil for sleepwalking through life, afraid of what is different.

Instead, look at the exotic as a gift. The lure of the mysterious is a catalyst for discovery, where new ideas, growth and innovation begins.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-13

As I lay on the ground staring up into the peaceful sky, Arches brings out this curiosity and the lure of possibilities. What is out there?

I hear her words floating around, softly within my dreams and as whispers within the wind. Sweetly telling me to ignore the drone of modern life and wrap myself up into her inviting arms.

Traveling from the temperate rain forest of Ellinor, where new shades of green highlight every visit, to the extreme of the high-desert of Arches, where stunning shades of color seize the senses.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-10

Last night, under a midnight-black sky a perfect song flicked on the radio, the words of Ellinor lighting up the road ahead:

“Go on and close your eyes, go on imagine me there.  She’s got similar features with longer hair, and if that’s what it takes to get you through ~ Go on and close your eyes, it shouldn’t bother you…”

–  Melissa Etheridge, โ€œSimilar Featuresโ€

Her words a bit harsh, but I had to find her so I closed my eyes and hit the gas.  If all turned out the way I dreamt it to be, my reward would be witnessing the arching of her back in delight as she accepted me as one who was worthy.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-20

Arches brings to me the diverse look of Mother Earth, one to be embraced: an attraction from deep in the heart, full of uncertainty. Something new, similar to the excitement found around the world: a new culture, a different shade of skin or an intriguing philosophy of life.

Nothing can break the strong bonds I hold for Ellinor, she is family and Iโ€™ve shared my deepest and greatest secrets with her. However, life is not all a temperate rain forest and Arches has seen to thatโ€ฆ

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-8

Extremes exist and instead of lashing out in fear at differences, life is more interesting when embracing the mystery. Ellinor may be upset as I continue my courtship with Arches, but it is while she blushes as new hikers arrive to test her slopes, biting her lip as she feels their exotic touch.

Inspiration is one gift nature gives daily, without thought of creed or race, creating one family respectful and caring for the beauty of Mother Nature and her daughters.

Utah - Arches and Canyonlands-12

Arches.  The allure of colors and your perfume floating in the wind are what makes this land great and keeps us coming back for more.

My return to Ellinor will be fueled by the intense feelings we shared this summer.  Your bite of inspiration and temptation towards the exotic heightens the meaning of love.

As I again rest my head on my earthen pillow, I hear Ellinor softly whispering to me again: “Go on and close your eyes, go on imagine me thereโ€ฆ”

It is always a cause for celebration when a post from you appears in my reader Randall. The third photo is just absolutely killer-good! But then, all your photos are. Love your reveries too….Ellinor looks like she was born in these amazing vistas.

The vistas and the scenery were more than I expected, and also loved the people I met along the way. A great trip ~ thank you Cindy, such a celebration for me when I see you here as well. Cheers.

Stunning photos Randall. You really captured the strange beauty of Arches and her washed out canyons, colors and rocks. “She ignites freshness from the very core of my soul, lighting a fire of new ideas and dreams.” Your words are exotic, evocative, even erotic at times. You certainly had fun with your Arches lover. I hope Ellinor forgives you. XD I might have a bad case of wanderlust and travel envy.
Thanks for sharing your passion and gifts. Wonderful!!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Arches did surprise me, the detail as well as the diversity of the different areas…exotic, and Mother Nature is always evocative and sensual which is why I think we all like to get out and visit her as much as we can. Wish you a great final month of summer ~

Agreed, but I’m not used to reading about her in such a sensual way. Thanks for stirring me up. ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€œGo on and close your eyes, go on imagine me thereโ€ฆโ€ You sure you want to play this game?
Lol. O Randy, I do believe she’s got you tamed! Yes, you are right, the thrill of the pursuit never gets old!
I closed my eyes just for a moment and imagined you out there. You, mother nature and those arches, and they appeared as towering giants. Momentarily stole my breath way!
As always, magnificent photographs Randy and yet again I fine myself filled with envy ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha…it is a dangerous game, but so worth giving it a try ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, I tell you I’ve been tamed many times by nature which is why I will keep pursuing…one of these days I keep telling myself!

While I knew what to expect by seeing photos of this place, being there and feeling it was incredible ~ it exceeded my expectations greatly. And yes, there were places there I did not have time to visit (but talked with people who did) and felt myself filled with positive envy too. Cheers to a great ending of the summer for you and your family Dotta ~ thank you.

Yes! You’re “The King”, Mister Globetrotter! Do you have a house somewhere?! You do not sit at all, on your home! ๐Ÿ˜€
    P.S. The song is beautiful!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha – well, when I get the chance to travel (as with business), I must take a day or two and survey the local scene with a camera and lens ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Imagynasium Avatar

Have you ever been in Romania?

      2. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Not yet, but one day I home to trek the Carpathian Mountains, enjoy its hot springs and fill-up a few flashcards with great photography ๐Ÿ™‚

      3. Imagynasium Avatar

If you visit Romania, forget the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube Delta, Blak Sea coast, Monastery of Bucovina, Iron Gates of the Danube, Castle of Dracula, antic history or other miracles of this kind. After arriving at the airport Otopeni, take a taxi to the historical center of Bucharest (arrive in thirty minutes) and sit on a stool, at one of the many bars in the area. Look around and then you see the most beautiful women, famous all over the world. After that, you’ll probably go to your embassy, which is near and you want to become a romanian citizen. Take care Dalo, Romania is a place full of “traps”! ๐Ÿ˜€

      4. Dalo 2013 Avatar

I’ve heard Bucharest is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with the most beautiful women ~ so I think you are right, I’d want to stay there forever. Cheers and thank you very much for this introduction and plan. Will give you a call when in town and buy you a beer or two ~

      5. Imagynasium Avatar

Oh, no, Dalo! Bucharest is not a beautiful cities, even in Romania and even less in Europe, or in the World! The communist period transformed the city into a giant of concrete without architectural aesthetics. But we have wide boulevards and squares, as i have not seen in Europe! I told you that only women, are most beautiful! With so many beautiful women around, do you think that someone could be interested, how beautiful is the city!? Now be careful and remember; MY FAVORITE BEER IS HOEGAARDEN! ๐Ÿ˜€

      6. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, now I better understand and definitely need to see and check this place out myself ๐Ÿ™‚ And yes, many Hoegaarden beers to celebrate…

  33. Mabel Kwong Avatar

“why am I here?” I think that’s a question we ask ourselves all the time. Though I’m not staunchly religious, I’m a big believer in fate and the whole concept of stars aligning. Most of the time, we’re at a certain place because we made a choice, a choice that may be influenced by our gut feeling or intuition and where that feeling comes from is anyone’s guess.

Totally agree with you that going down the path unknown is a mysterious journey, one that is hard to predict. It reminds me of the time when I moved back to Melbourne almost a decade ago – I didn’t really want to and resisted the move. I kept to myself, knew very little people and frankly speaking, white Aussies scared me (mainly because of their mannerisms). Then I decided I didn’t want to live life like that and eventually started getting involved in things that interested me such a community radio and connected with others. At some point, the unfamiliar will become familiar if we relax and take things as they come with no expectations.

Brilliant piece of philosophical writing. Love how entwined the different throes of romantic love throughout this piece. Very, clever. Love knows no boundaries. Also love the cosmic, star photography. Amazing and you have got me inspired to take better photos ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Yes, I too follow and trust in ็ผ˜ๅˆ†, I find it to be a perfect term…as we do make our own decisions taking what life gives us. And every now and then, it feels good to get a good taste of adventure ๐Ÿ™‚ Your experience in Melbourne was similar to my experience in Xi’an…I could hang with the ex-pats or get involved with the locals, and by choosing the latter it opened a new door of culture and ideas.

In a sense, going for it in Arches like I did was embracing this area all I could for the short time I was there; fall in love with the place and make it memorable ๐Ÿ™‚ Wishing you a great day Mabel, thank you.

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Adventure is always good as we don’t know what we’ll discover. We might come out of it a whole new person, or discover a whole new side we never knew existed. In short, adventure teaches us what we’re capable of – and that the world is our playground.

  44. Sofia Avatar

Good to see you are in love ๐Ÿ˜‰ Beautiful photos! Silly question I know, but do you think the name Arches has anything to do with its arches?

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It was a trip that happily surprised me, so much to see and so much energy. As for Arches, yes the name is due to the incredible number of these great arches around the park. One arch has fallen recently, and others are slowly coming down (natural erosion); the geological history of this place is pretty fascinating.

      1. Sofia Avatar

One of those arches falling must have been spectacular!

Stunning images. Not only have you created some truly beautiful photos, but the result is very much personal and very artistic. I have been to Arches National Park and know how easy it is to be settling for the cliches – or for the exotic. You are still capturing its beauty in your own natural way.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Otto. Roaming around Arches without a set plan gave me a bit of freedom in chasing a shot a wanted. The highlights of Arches were overwhelming, and even the cliche shots/areas were fun ~ it was the first time I’ve seen such intense sandstone artwork, I didn’t quite know how to go about shooting it ๐Ÿ™‚

I had the same feeling when I visited the Arches – and other rock formations. And then went bananas…

Ha, ha ~ exactly. Once I got the camera out and started shooting, I was all over the place ๐Ÿ™‚

This is absolutely magical. I loved everything about Arches the first time I went– I was seventeen. The colors, shapes and an overwhelming strength of being filled my soul with an indescribable, yet strangely familiar, longing. I was swept away and almost imagined myself on the plain of a different universe, so different in appearance, atmosphere and rugged elegance from the familiarity of my own. This is totally and completely captivating– very, very well done.

What you experienced is exactly what I felt ~ so different and so powerful. I spent my first hours there (at White Rim Outlook) just admiring the sights, formations and colors…and then I unpacked my camera and had fun ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope to wander to Bryce Canyon one day and then further south into Arizona some day. So many great places to see ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you Wendy wishing you a great coming weekend.

If you loved Arches you will be head over heels for Bryce!! …and Zion NP… oh my!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love everything about Arizona …the Grand Canyon is — beyond extraordinary, an incredibly ancient beauty. The North Rim Lodge is … well– I’ll let you find out for yourself~ if you ever make it down that way. Have a beautiful week! …and just a piece of advice–when you do go, hold on to Elinor tightly– the arches, canyons, deep red rocks and turquoise streams have a power of possession that is positively unparalleled. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Mmm, your description of these places make me want to take off today to be seduce by such sights. I look forward to the visits to Bryce and Zion ~ and then the eventual trek to the Grand Canyon. So much to explore… ๐Ÿ™‚

The allure of color at Arches grabbed us as well, totally mesmerizing to camp there and see them transform as the sun shifted. Gorgeous starry night capture! After appreciating the superficial beauty of this place, we began to also be deeply awed at Nature’s raw power to mold and shape. Happy travels!

I think that is what impressed me the most, how the shifting of light could change the landscape so much…looking so different depending on the time of day. Thank you and wishing you safe travels ~

You have left me speechless with your spectacular pictures and talented writing! Don’t think I can write long comments like the others because your post on Arches and Ellinor have left me, well, “without speech” ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for sharing…I wonder what’s next in store for you and us the readers ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you Kat, that is one thing I like about the National Parks I’ve visited, they speak for themselves and not much is needed to be said ๐Ÿ™‚ Wish you a great weekend.

Magnificent. Maybe it’s the sculptor in me but I see Nature giving you the OK sign – the second picture looks like the thumb and finger meeting ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, I like your view of the second photo. It matches the feeling I had that the place was giving me the thumbs up throughout my travels there ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks Mary ~
