Don’t Die Wondering…

Pacific Northwest Nature-5

Sitting along the shore of Elliott Bay, I often wonder what it would have been like centuries ago when Native Americans spent the summertime in Seattle.  The Seattle summer with its perfect weather is special, so I imagine it would have been heaven on earth to see the sun setting on this land so long ago when the wilderness ruled.

Pacific Northwest Nature-12

Back in those days, getting outside and involved was not much of a question as physical interaction with nature was a part of everyday life.  A hard life no doubt, but I would bet more satisfying too as everything you owned likely came from the things around you: animals, earth and community.

Animals and earth to feed and clothe, and a community to share, love, explore and work the land.

Pacific Northwest Nature-13

Not quite the same scene we have today, where two minutes “on-line” results in the delivery of food, clothing and most importantly the latest tech-toy delivered right to the front door without having to leave the house.

Products produced by factories scattered all over the globe. A crazy concept even today, something unthinkable a couple hundred years ago. Most everything I own I have no real clue as to its true origin.

Pacific Northwest Nature-1

Still, amid all this technology and social media shrill that drowns our senses from the calls of the real world, there are always reminders that take us out of this artificial shell and plop us down in the middle of life.  Something to makes us reassess our obsession with material possessions.

The nudge of a wet nose from Man’s Best Friend, or driving through a mountain pass with the sun dipping below the horizon is just what is needed for us to get back to the basics. Back to the feeling of living.

Pacific Northwest Nature-2

The past few weeks have had me traveling around the Pacific Northwest with work, and instead of flying I made a point to drive; taking the more scenic routes and allowing myself a few more days to take in the sights.

My mind spinning a bit as I would try to reconcile life today with how it was more than 100 years ago. Getting lost in how different things are today made me wonder what the next 100 years will bring…and how foreign our time today will appear to our future selves.

Pacific Northwest Nature-3

Back to the early 90s, when I took off for China for the first time, I had this small sticker on my bag that read: Don’t Die Wondering.

The message the sticker represented fascinated me, as I loved to wonder…in fact, I was more often in dream than I was running around nature. The message reminded me that dreaming and wondering is just part of the formula, and moving forward by doing and experiencing is how we complete the circle and find a happy life.

Pacific Northwest Nature-8

I still have this sticker and message, and more than ever realize how important this simple slogan is: to wonder, to dream and to go out and do.  To create a unique path in life. For the most part, I imagine that people in history also followed this same simple line of reasoning.

A reminder that it is a never-ending process.

Wonder. Dream. Do. Happiness.

Pacific Northwest Nature-11
Pacific Northwest Nature-4

I suppose that the message on this sticker was a simple warning that if we spend too much of our time wondering what could have been? With the mind spinning to answer the unanswerable, “what if?” It is easy to get lost in the irrelevant past while new opportunities slip by.

Why sit wondering what it would be like, when adventures and experiences lie right outside the door?

Pacific Northwest Nature-7

It will be impossible to fully understand what Native Americans or frontiersmen of the past thought when they saw the dawn rise every day over Seattle hundreds of years ago, but I imagine it must have recharged them.

A perfect start to the day, a time to admire the land and contemplate what was to be explored and admired.  With no TV or Internet to tempt and waste hours of a day, I would think it must have been exciting to be immersed in nature as a part of daily life.  True, such a life would be hard, but in a sense also simple.

Pacific Northwest Nature-10

As this great summer winds down, I am left thinking that we will continue to push ourselves further away from this great land of ours, with the result of losing touch with the physical nature of living.

As we load ourselves up with processed foods and mass-produced ’emotions’ emitting from our screens, at some point we will begin wondering what could have been ~ what if we had moved forward and taken the advice from a 30-year-old sticker: Don’t Die Wondering.

I wonder how important is “to dream”? It seems like I often skip “dreaming”, and go from wondering directly to doing. Hmm… Helen

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Interesting, I spend the majority of time dreaming…often never getting to the doing part until way later 🙂

I always wonder mostly with the present time. We have history and I wonder how we are using this to enrich our lives. Your photos brings so much wonder that will be kept for millions of years should the web remains intact. The future will be different, this post will become a history and they will wonder how beautiful earth was. With big change we made on this earth, I wonder what the future would be. Excellent photos and food for thought. I prefer bacon than ham.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you seeker, given a choice I choose bacon as well 🙂 The past & future intrigue me, but like you I focus on today and tomorrow…although it would have been nice to have been an explorer! Cheers

I often long for a simpler life closer to nature, and your exquisite photographs are good reminders of the beauty and bounty nature has to offer. It is so easy to waste time with the endless distractions technology brings, or simply wondering without doing anything concrete. Life is so rich with possibility, yet we often waste it by dwelling on the things that bog us down. I always feel as if my spirit soar to higher places when I look at your photographs. That is a rare gift you have, and one I am grateful for.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you Jolandi, very nice words. I think that is the great thing about nature, it tends to put things into perspective… and when feeling down, I can always take a look at the beauty of nature and walk away with a smile on my face.

Another beautiful post from you! Don’t Die Wondering….is both inspiring and sad. These pictures and philosophy makes the reader wonder, as you bring such beauty and reality into our lives. How the world has changed and changes constantly, how we would see our future/foreign selves, Thank you for sharing…and my mind wonders…..

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Never really thought of it as sad, but you are right ~ change is constant, and I think sometimes we just don’t want change. Thank you very much for the nice words. Cheers!

Oh gosh, those beautiful photos…and your words. I am at crossword of choosing my next career path, been trying to ignore it for a while. Until now. After reading your post, it makes me think about it again 🙂 Thank you so much for the post, and yup, don’t die wondering!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Great to hear you’re thinking about a new career ~ this type of change I think is the hardest…maybe this post came at a perfect time 🙂 Thank you Indah and wish you well!

Synchronicities… Have had so many on the WP since i got back… I’ve been pondering some similar things my Friend, our past, our future, and what if everything is happening at the same time 🙂 . I figure the reincarnation is not linear as we are led to believe but its multidimensional, and whatever happens here impacts our other selves, our history and our future. I agree though, we can make the difference in the ‘now’ that we are aware of.
I realite more and more how devoid from the nature and land we become and how quickly we forget that from Earth we came and to her we shall return when we lay our bodies. How weird it would be to ‘return’ to an unkown place thats meant to be home… Thank you for the forever inspiring images snd words! Luv xox

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thank you ~ I’m a believer in multiple universes so your theory sounds good to me 🙂 I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to ‘forgetting’ about nature, but ever so often I get great reminders, and there is not a better feeling than coming home. Take care!

    Hello Randall,
What can I say…your words and photos have left me, well, speechless 😉
I too, thought the expression ‘Don’t die Wondering’ is very poignant. I think many of us are questioning the current lifestyle in modern (‘well-to-do’) societies. With the ways things are going, perhaps it’s natural to feel that something is out of balance… I too, am at the point in my life when I must make the big jump regarding ‘careers.’ It’s terrifying, but perhaps necessary.

The scenes you present are breathtaking. I can’t imagine how much more so it must be in-person, and how glorious it must have been for the native people of your vast country. Life certainly must have been harder, but it must have also made moments like these so much more beautiful (and meaningful). Hmm…I’d better stop dreaming and get back to living 😉
Thank you so much again for sharing your talent & art with us.

    Best wishes,
    Takami

  14. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Don’t die wondering. That phrase has always resonated with me, along with “you miss all the shots you don’t take”. By going out and doing things, often you will see things along the way, and different paths, people and opportunities will pop up. And I think this is the beauty of going out and doing what we want to do.

Maybe it is the unexpected things that we discover along the way in this man-made world that will ring the most clearly in our minds – and feel the most significant to us – years down the track. Ever since I decided to get serious about writing and started my blog two years ago, I have had numerous writing opportunities come my way. It feels good to see my articles published (a big thing for most writers), but it does not compare to the feeling I get when I learn something new, like learning a random new descriptive phrase when I’m reading a book I picked up by chance at the library, or getting an interesting thought out of the blue looking at a tree, or even networking with another blogger or writer in person by chance. There’s just something more memorable about the latter, at least for me. Offline, too.

Stunning photos as usual, and moving words too. I’m sure you know that already. Could you ever choose between photography and writing? 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Agree, it is the connections and experiences that we get out of the doing ~ after we’ve done all the wondering/dreaming. Thanks Mabel, and as to choosing between the two, I would have to take photography…too much invested in the equipment 🙂

      1. Mabel Kwong Avatar

Definitely. We shouldn’t every stop wondering or dreaming too as there is always so much out there for us to learn about and discover.

Gotcha. Photography is a rather costly hobby, after all 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Perfect way to look at this, fill ourselves whenever we can… We do live in an amazing and modern world, impressive but getting back to nature now & then increases this appreciation. Thank you Karen. Have a great week.

Stunning images and wonderful thoughts Randall! This brought a thought in my mind: I’ve never heard an older person say they tried too many things or traveled too much in their life, or that they shouldn’t have tried to pursue their dreams. Wonder. Dream. Do. Happiness – I like this very much! 🙂

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Elina, you say it very well…best take a chance to ‘do’ than ‘don’t’. Wish you the best with wondering, dreaming, doing and most of all happiness. Cheers!

Stunning photographs and even more brilliant prose to accompany them. I am captivated by the natural world, by the continuous wonder that it provides to my curious mind. And if I am being quite honest, I have allowed myself to slip out of that wondrous state, being cajoled by the ploys of society to live the life that supports itself, one characterized by instant gratification, communication, and a sense of laziness physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is therapeutic messages and posts such as yours that bring us back to the place where we naturally want to be. Thank you for sharing such an important message and best wishes for an inspired day 😉

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Thanks Dave, I think that is it ~ coming back to nature in some sense, at certain times is necessary to correct our balance, and then we can attack the world again (be it in our laziness or some other state!). Cheers!

You post reminds me of a song by Lee Ann Womack, I HOPE YOU DANCE. Your words here resonates so deeply with her lyrics, and to a person like myself, I can’t help but smile in acknowledgement of a fellow lover of nature.
I like your sense of wonder Randy, it has taken you far beyond, to places many only dream of, and yet you still forge ahead with this beautiful dance of life.

  21. Tina Schell Avatar

Your, as always, beautiful photos are intermingled with some pretty heavy philosophy this time around Randall! I love the “don’t die wondering” command. My thinking is that you, like me, are on a quest to see the world and it’s wonders. I saw a great quote the other day that said something about every traveler carrying his journeys with him, and in think that’s true. If we didn’t wonder, we wouldn’t do, would we?! Here’s to knowing there will always be yet another place somewhere, whether near or far, that we need to reach in order to salve yet another bout of “wondering”!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Ha, ha…yeah, a little heavier on the philosophy but it seems to mix well when I travel (or think/read about traveling). I like the idea you mention about the traveler carrying the journeys with him, a lot of truth there ~ and the wondering often is the fuel. Thanks Tina!

You deliver the best surprises, as they all have to do with you. I know we share similar interests in regards to the outdoors, but you really have no idea how much I agree with what you’re explaining here in your gorgeous post.

Your photos are, once again, amazing. It’s more than that though, even without your words, you have a way of telling a story. You show life, Dalo. Man, do I love that about photographers. You see everything through a different eye. My favorites, this time, may shock you…love the geese and dogs, so much! Mountain views are fantastic, close to my heart, but that wild grass…breathtaking. The movement is sharp and alive in the shot.

Yeah, I get it. Put it away. Live life. I totally agree with you. While I was tubing this summer I thought about a lot, but want to know what I thought about the most? What it was like to live a few hundred years ago. Surviving every day in extreme rocky conditions, hot weathered windy messes, and the strength it took for so many people to survive is humbling. Intriguing. I love being outside and I always feel accomplished after a long day of it. I miss it when I’m back here in the city. I try to sneak away to a wooded park and pretend to be out living, but somehow it never quite convinces me. Its all good.

I’m really glad to hear that you’ve been driving and enjoying the country around you. My favorite, absolute favorite, thing to do. I could get lost in it all.

Hoping you’ll share the PR with us, too. Your friends sound nice. A great outlook…tell me more, please.

Thanks for this, Dalo. You should see my smile. Have a great night. 🙂

Thank you Audrey, the geese shot is one of my favorites too…the house in the distance seems to straddles both the past & present (modernity and nature). And to have a view like that, perfect.

I really like the slogan: Don’t Die Wondering. I think it’s been a motto for my life, although not really consciously. But you never get bored with life if you can’t stop wondering. Besides this is personally a delightful post, since I spend much time in the area you show and write about. As a matter of fact in about a week I will go back to Seattle – and looking at your images I get very excited thinking about it. Your photos are simply stunning – and so beautiful.

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

It does make a good motto for life, for as you say life is never boring as long as we wonder. Thanks Otto, and enjoy your time here ~ it has been an incredible summer. One of these days we will have to meet up! I’m back off to China in a couple weeks, leaving here will be tough.

  34. Eric Tonningsen Avatar

You have gently and easily rekindled a yearning for my old stomping grounds. I concur, Randy, there is merit in wondering and dreaming but they pale when compared to actually experiencing, thriving, and immersing oneself into being with nature. I know this contributes to my decision to live among Native American pueblos scattered across the New Mexico High Desert. It is their generations old way of living — spiritually, respectfully, and in reverence to this earth that grounds me, still. Another exceptionally thoughtful post. Thanks!

  37. Sofia Avatar

Hi Randy! I love all the photos and cant pick a favourite in this fantastic post! One of the things I learnt this summer in the North of France, basically because (ahem) the weather is generally bad, is to just “do”. If the sun is shining and the temperature is warm, quick, go and swim in the English channel while it lasts (one hour). If it’s not raining but cloudy, quick, go for a jog in some great paths in nature, or ride the bicycle in the countryside, because a few hours later you might not be able to because it will rain. If you hear a meow, run out because a mama cat with her 3 kittens just came into the garden and let me pat her (yes, a fantastic moment!!!). I think you’re right how we waste our life with modern things and centuries ago our relatives must have so enjoyed nature. Wishing you a great week! Cheers!

    1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Hey Sofia, very happy you liked the post ~ getting out into the natural world to just ‘do’ is a perfect place find small but perfect moments to make a great day. Put perspective into our busy days/lives. I always try to take advantage of the time I have to do 🙂 Wish you a great day! Cheers!

A lot of people get taken aback with so many things. I think, if you have the heart to something, if you have that desire, you should just go! Avoid too much concern, stop thinking beyond other things, don’t fret, and never hesitate once you decide. Reflection, wondering, is good, but only in moderation. Always great words, always great images. Truly one of the best blogs.

Randall, I think these shots have trumped the others in my heart. That is really saying something, as we all obviously love your photos. Your opening dark amber shot and the one of the reeds are exquisite. And the text does justice to the photo essay, as always. You write on strands I have spun myself on the blog – esp as I wonder how the mechanized living that brings instant gratification and disembodies us from our roots and the earth will affect our children. The small matter of just being and breathing and enjoying the outdoors is something we have to make an effort at, as we do so much of our business and learning in postmodern caves. Love your mindful circle of the dreaming and doing. I appreciate sharing in your journey.

I too wonder about the changes and sometimes don’t like the direction that we are going relative to “consuming” nature. Then I take a deep breath and find solace in the beauty of kindness, people working for transformation and the notion that nature will thrive with or without humans. I hope we learn to play our part in the grand harmony of life.
I love your reminder to wonder, wander, dream and do. Maybe it’s time to tune my song. blessings, Brad

Thanks Brad, that is one thing I do believe is that as humans we will always come back to Mother Earth with appreciation. Have a good weekend!

“Life consists of rare, isolated moments of the greatest significance and of innumerably many intervals, during which at best the silhouettes of those moments hover about us. Love, springtime, every beautiful melody, mountains, the moon, the sea — all these speak completely to the heart but once, if in fact they ever do get a chance to speak completely. For many men do not have those moments at all, and are themselves intervals and intermissions in the symphony of real life.”

    – Friedrich Nietzsche, from Human, All Too Human

We know nothing, even about ourselves… but you know so much about life. Oh, that dogs!!! Wish I could have been there, watching them…

You definitely would have enjoyed the view, water and of course the dogs playing in their own world ~ really a great sight. Thank you Luana, it is all part of the symphony of real life and something we cannot lose track of. Wish you the best!

It HAS been a glorious summer here, and your photos sparkle with that feeling. You manage to get so much into your posts- all I can say is, yes, we need to get away from these techiethings and closer to the fire and air and earth and water. Thanks!

Yes, I think one of the nicest summers I’ve experience here ~ back in Asia now, but look forward to a winter return (even with cold & rain, it can be beautiful). Thank you and wish you a great ending to the summer!
